Tutorial
By default, all conversations on Messenger don’t have end-to-end encryption. However, you can start using the feature on some of your chats.
With the help of secret conversations, you can protect your messages with end-to-end encryption. As such, no one else can listen or view your chat aside from the conversation participants.
Aside from that, you can also use disappearing messages on secret chats. Using this feature deletes your messages automatically after the set amount of time passes.
How to use end-to-end encrypted conversation on Messenger
If you want to use end-to-end encryption in one of your chats in Messenger, you can start a secret conversation with the user. With the help of this feature, only you and the recipient can view and check the chat.
You can start secret conversations on the Messenger mobile app. In our tutorial below, we’ll show you how to do it from an Android device.
- Launch Messenger from your home screen or app drawer and open one of your chats with your friends.
- Tap the information icon on the right side of the conversation header.
- Once the options appear on your screen, select “Go to secret conversation.”
- Send a message to start the conversation.
That’s how you start secret conversations on the Messenger app for Android. An end-to-end encrypted conversation works like a normal chat, so you can send messages, videos, voice recordings, pictures and start encrypted calls.
Please note that you can’t start secret conversations with businesses, professional accounts, Instagram accounts, and people that you have not sent a message to before.
How to set disappearing messages on your secret conversations
If you want to automatically delete chats in your encrypted conversation, you can use the disappearing messages feature. With the help of this option, messages within the conversation expire after the set amount of time.
- Head to the secret conversation that you want to manage.
- Tap the timer icon on the left side of the message field.
- Select the duration you prefer and tap “OK” to confirm your decision.
Please note that you can report secret conversations that go against the community standards of Facebook. If you received messages that violate the standards of the app, you have the option to report the conversation to send for review.
