How To Use Push-to-talk On Zoom
Last Updated: November 23, 2021
Are you tired of clicking the unmute button every time you want to speak in your Zoom meeting? If so, you can use the push-to-talk function on their desktop client to unmute yourself with the help of the space key. In our quick guide below, we’ll show you how to enable and use the feature on Zoom.
Tutorial
In Zoom, users can mute themselves when they’re not currently speaking to lessen the background noise or distractions from their audio feed. When it’s their time to talk, they can unmute their microphone to start speaking during the meeting.
You can find the mute/unmute button at the bottom of the meeting window on the Zoom desktop app. Although you can unmute yourself with one click of your mouse, there might be times when you might forget to turn it back off.
Thankfully, Zoom has a push-to-talk feature, which allows you to unmute temporarily during a video conference on their desktop app. With the help of this feature, you can stay muted throughout the meeting and hold down the spacebar when it’s your turn to speak.
Here’s our guide about enabling the push-to-talk feature on the Zoom desktop client.
How to enable the push-to-talk feature on Zoom
If you don’t want to click the unmute button every time you want to talk on Zoom, you can enable and use the push-to-talk feature on the app. In this way, you can press the spacebar on your keyboard to temporarily unmute yourself so that you can talk during meetings.
You can use the push-to-talk function of the Zoom desktop client. Follow our quick tutorial below, and we’ll show you how to enable the feature on your account.
- Open the Zoom desktop client on your computer and sign in to your account.
- Click the gear icon on the top right side of the app to open your Settings.
- Head to the Audio tab.
- Scroll down and make sure to enable the “Press and hold SPACE key to temporarily unmute yourself” option.
After enabling the push to talk option, you can press and hold on to your spacebar during your meeting to unmute. Once you release the button, you’ll go back to your muted state.
Please note that you can’t use push-to-talk to unmute yourself if the host prevented other users from unmuting. You’ll need to wait until the host lifts the restriction before you can talk again during the meeting.
As for those using the Zoom mobile client, there’s no push-to-talk feature on the app. Although that’s the case, it’s easy to unmute yourself during meetings from your phone.
To wrap it all up
Now that you know how to enable and use the push-to-talk feature on Zoom, you can stay muted most of the time during your meetings. If you ever wish to talk, you can press and hold the spacebar to temporarily unmute yourself.
