How To Use A Discord Nitro Code

Discord Nitro is the platform’s premium subscription tier that provides some extras for serious users. In return for a monthly fee, you get access to custom tags, emojis, badges, higher resolution screen sharing and other good stuff. This tutorial will discuss Discord Nitro, whether it’s worth the money and how to use a Discord Nitro code if you get hold of one.

Discord still offers a free tier for occasional users but has added two levels of subscription tiers for those who want a little extra. Discord still has an advantage over TeamSpeak and Ventrilo in that it doesn’t charge for server space but it now offers the opportunity ‘a way to support discord’s journey into the future’.

What is Discord Nitro?

Discord Nitro is a premium subscription split into two tiers, Nitro Classic and Discord Nitro. They offer a range of extras only available to subscribers and can be well worth the money if you’re a frequent user of the platform.

Nitro Classic costs $4.99 a month or $49.99 per year and includes:

  1. Unique GIFs, avatars and emoji.
  2. The use of emoji everywhere.
  3. Increased upload size to 50MB (from 8MB).
  4. Higher screenshare resolution of up to 1080p.
  5. Discord Nitro badge for your profile.

Discord Nitro costs $9.99 a month or $99.99 per year and offers all those things plus access to some free games in the Discord store. There are some old but recognizable games there such as Star Wars Republic Commando, Psychonauts, Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic, Bioshock, Xcom and others.

Discord Nitro also gets Server Boosting, which is essentially a temporary upgrade to the server’s audio, more emoji slots and increase upload capacity. Interestingly, other games give you in-game items for being a Nitro user. For example, Warframe offers unique items, as does Paladins, Warface and others.

What each tier offers is regularly updated so this list is not exhaustive. This page on the discord website will have the latest list of what’s included within each Nitro subscription.

How do you use a Discord Nitro code?

Discord Nitro codes seem to be everywhere but very few of them are legit or legal. Discord does do giveaways at certain times of year but otherwise, you’re going to have to be lucky to find a legit code. Lots of websites offer them but as far as I can tell, few are real.

If you do get a real Discord Nitro code, here’s how to apply it:

  1. Log into Discord and select Library from the left menu.
  2. Select Gift Inventory and Redeem Code.
  3. Enter your 19 digit code into the box and hit Redeem.
  4. Select Nitro from the left menu to see if the code has been successful.

You should see a free month of Nitro in the Nitro menu once you have redeemed your code. This is the same process you use to redeem game codes and any other special codes relevant to Discord.

Is Nitro worth the money?

Is Discord Nitro worth the money? That depends on how much you use Discord and how important it is to you to be recognized as a contributor and to contribute. The premium bonuses are a little meh in their own right. More emoji? Wow. Some old games? No thanks.

Higher resolution screenshares and a higher upload limit may help if you do that a lot of that but otherwise aren’t amazing in their own right. In-game items may be of a benefit if you play those games but are otherwise not very useful.

That said, if having unique emojis, GIFs and other graphical goodies is important or nice to have then Nitro is going to be worth it. These things are more an inducement to some people than others and work like gamification by offering visible ways to differentiate yourself from other users. This may or may not work for you.

Worth in Discord is more about playing your part in keeping your platform and your community alive. It costs a lot of money to run it. We moved from TeamSpeak because we didn’t have to pay for server space on Discord. Nitro is your way to pay it forward a little.

I think the feeling of helping to contribute to the continued existence of a platform we use often is the only reward worth having in Discord Nitro. I may be in the minority here and that’s fine but the idea that I am helping to keep the lights on even in a small way is like crowdfunding a good cause. It costs me a little but can help a lot. That’s where I think the true value of Discord Nitro lies.
