Last Updated: October 27, 2021
Do you want to send emoticons instead of emojis on Discord? Do you want to turn off the auto conversion of emoticons to emojis on your messages? In our guide below, we’ll show you how to change your settings and manage your emojis on Discord.
By default, the emoticons you send on the Discord desktop and web app change to emojis automatically. As such, you can share emojis faster without opening the selection every time you want to use them.
However, some people want to send emoticons instead of emojis on Discord. Thankfully, you can turn off the auto emoji feature on your Text & Image settings whenever you want.
When you turn off the auto emoji feature, you can send emoticons like “:)” without turning them into their associated emoji on the app.
With that in mind, here’s our guide on how to turn off auto emoji on Discord.
How to turn off auto emoji on your messages on Discord
If you don’t want emojis to appear on your messages unless you specifically add them, you can turn off the auto-convert feature on Discord. In this way, you can send a few combinations of characters and make emoticons without turning them into emojis on channels and conversations on the app.
You can turn off auto emojis on the Discord desktop and web app. Follow our step-by-step tutorial below to learn how.
On your computer:
- Launch the Discord (desktop or web app) and log in to your account.
- Click the cog/gear icon on the bottom left to open your User Settings.
- Under App Settings, head to the Text & Images tab.
- Scroll to the Emoji section and turn off the “Automatically convert emoticons in your messages to emoji” option.
Once you disable this feature, all the emoticons you send on your messages won’t appear as emojis. Instead, they’ll appear as plain text for other members to see.
Like we mentioned earlier, the automatic emoticon conversion isn’t available on the Discord mobile app. As such, there’s no need for you to worry about sending emojis on channels and conversations with your account accidentally.
Always remember that you can still send emojis even if you disabled the emoticon conversion feature. All you have to do is select the emoji icon on the bottom right side of the conversation and select the one you want to use.
To wrap things up
Now that you know how to turn off the auto emoji on Discord, emoticons you send on their web and desktop app won’t turn into emojis automatically. Although that’s the case, you can still send emojis by clicking the smiley icon on the bottom right of the conversation or by using other shortcuts.
