How To Tell If Someone Is Online In Discord

On one level, it is very straightforward to tell if someone is online in Discord as their status will clearly show it. That isn’t the end of the story though as there are ways to appear invisible. So the answer is partly yes you can tell if someone is online and also partly no, it isn’t always possible to tell if someone is online in Discord.

If you’re new to Discord, it works like many other chat services and offers a platform where like minded people can chat about games, life and anything they like within a relatively safe space.

While Discord was originally designed for gamers, it has evolved into much more than that. It is now a place for people from all walks of life, all cultures and all interests can hang out. There is probably a Discord channel for everyone if you can find them all.

Online status in Discord

Let’s start with the basics. When you sign up to Discord and first log in, you will see your username at the bottom left of the main screen. Next to it you will see a green dot. This means you’re online. If you join a server, you will see the users of that server in the right pane. Some of those will also have a green dot by their name.

This tells you they are online too. You will also see them chatting in the center pane or hear them voice chat through your speakers or headphones.

There are four status in Discord:

  • Online – Green dot icon – You’re online, visible and available to chat.
  • Idle – Yellow moon icon – you’re AFK or doing something else right now.
  • Do Not Disturb – Red no entry icon – You’re in the middle of a raid or coop mission and won’t be chatting just now.
  • Invisible – Gray hollow dot icon – You’re being unsociable but want to see what’s going on without showing yourself.

You can set your status quickly in Discord. Just select your avatar by your username at the bottom of the screen. You should see a popup menu showing the four available status options. Select one and the green dot by your username should change to the corresponding color of the option you chose.

If you selected Online, Idle or Do Not Disturb, you will still appear in the users list on the right but will show the status icon beside your name. If you choose Invisible, you will disappear from the user list and nobody will be able to see you. You will still see your own name on the list but nobody else will.

Being Invisible on Discord

If you set your status to Invisible on Discord, you disappear from view. Not even the server owner or admin will be able to see you’re there. As far as I am aware, there are no bots who can see you either. You essentially disappear from view while still being able to see and hear everything that’s going on.

I have a problem with being invisible on Discord. The platform is a social space that provides a means for people to chat and share ideas. While lurkers have always been present on the platform, they aren’t really productive members of a channel or much use really.

If you’re online and don’t want to chat right now, use Do Not Disturb. We can see you’re online and that you’re in the middle of something so the vast majority of people won’t bother you. Discord suppresses notifications anyway so even if someone does both you, you won’t see it anyway.

Invisible is almost a license to spy on your fellow chatters. To listen in on their conversations while not being accountable. I personally do not think there should be an Invisible status on the platform at all. I know I’m not the only one, but for now, the option remains.

If you’re new to Discord, I would suggest participating as much as possible and avoid using Invisible status at all times. If you’re busy, say so and people will leave you alone. If you don’t want people to know you’re on Discord, log out and they won’t see you. Lurking and listening is not a productive behavior for anyone whether that’s online or in the real world. That’s my two cents anyway.
