How To Start A Zoom Meeting On Slack

Do you find Slack’s built-in call feature lacking features? Do you want to use Zoom on Slack instead of your online meetings instead? If that’s the case, you can connect Zoom to your workspace to access and start your meetings from your channels and conversations. With that in mind, here’s our quick guide on how to use Zoom on Slack.

Tutorial

Slack allows you to connect other third-party apps to your workspace. As such, every member of your workspace can use these apps from channels and conversations on the app.

In Slack, you can start voice and video calls with other members of your workspace. However, some people find the built-in feature lacking in terms of extra functions you can use to collaborate online.

Thankfully, you can connect Zoom to your workspace any time you want. As such, you can use Zoom instead of the default call feature when hosting meetings with other users.

Follow our quick guide below, and we’ll show you how to use Zoom on Slack.

How to use Zoom on Slack

If your team uses Zoom for online collaboration, you can connect the app to Slack to start your meetings in a conversation. In this way, other members can join your video conferences directly from a channel or group DM.

Before you can use Zoom on your workspace, you first need to install and authorize it on the app. After doing so, you can start a meeting from the Slack desktop or web app. Follow our step-by-step tutorial below to learn how.

Starting a Zoom meeting on Slack

  1. On the Zoom desktop or web app, head to one of your conversations and click the lightning icon on the message field.

  2. Type “/zoom” and press enter to add the command to the message field.

  3. Click the Send button to create the meeting room. Everyone participating in the channel or conversation gets to see the prompt to join the meeting.
  4. Once Zoom creates the room for the host, click Join.

If you can’t start a meeting right away, you’ll need to authorize Zoom on Slack. All you have to do is follow the steps sent through the conversation and approve the permission to use the app on your workspace.

For those with a Zoom phone plan, you can start outbound calls from Slack. To do so, use the shortcuts menu, type “/zoom call” + phone number, or display name on the message field, send the message, and click Call.

Joining a Zoom meeting on Slack

If you see the meeting prompt on the conversation, all you have to do is click the Join button to participate in the meeting. On the other hand, you can use the “/zoom” command if you know the meeting ID or Zoom link for the call.

  1. Click the lightning icon on the message field to access the shortcuts menu.
  2. Type “/zoom join” and add the meeting ID or Zoom link afterward.
  3. Hit the Send button to join the meeting.

You can ask the host for the passcode if the room requires you to use one. You can also check the first prompt on your conversation, and you’ll find the code below the invitation.

To wrap it all up

Now that you know how to use Zoom on Slack, you can use the app instead of the built-in call feature when hosting meetings with other workspace members. You can start video conferences from your channels and conversations on the app whenever you want.
