Tutorial

Aside from messaging and sharing files through channels and DMs on Slack, you can also call other members in the workspace. As such, you can set your virtual meetings through on your workspace without scheduling one on other video-conferencing apps.

Calls are available to everyone on Slack, whether you’re on a free or paid plan. Of course, the latter gives you more options like screen sharing and group calls.

But for starters, we’ll go first on how to start calls from DMs on your workspace. Here’s our quick guide to help you learn how to use this feature.

How to start a 1-on-1 call on Slack

If you’re using the Slack Free version, you can start video calls from DMs with another member. In this way, you don’t need to use another video conferencing app to discuss work-related or private topics with someone in the workspace.

You can start a 1-on-1 call on Slack, whether you’re on your phone or computer. In our step-by-step tutorials below, we’ll cover how to do it on both.

On your computer:

  1. Launch the Slack desktop app or visit their web browser client and sign in to your workspace.
  2. From the sidebar on the left, go to the conversation (DM) with the person that you want to call.

  3. On the top right of the conversation window, click the call icon.

Note: Google Chrome is the only browser where you can start calls on Slack.

Once the person accepts your call request, you can go ahead and talk to them with your microphone. If you want to use the camera, toggle the Video option during the call.

If the person that you’re trying to call has paused all notifications on the app, they’ll only receive a message that they missed the call through the conversation.

On your phone:

  1. Open Slack on your device and sign in to your account.
  2. Go to the conversation (DM) with the person you want to call on the app.

  3. On the top right side of the chat window, tap the Call icon.

After starting the call, you can turn on the camera by tapping “Video” within the call window. You can also flip your camera to switch between the front and rearview.

Please note that workspace owners and admins can set a third-party app as the call option. With that in mind, selecting the Call icon on your conversations may start the call through another app.

If you’re on a paid plan, you can start calls within a channel. You can also invite up to 14 people to an ongoing call.

Start your virtual meetings on Slack

Now that you know how to make a 1-on-1 call on Slack, you can start your private meetings on the workspace without switching to a third-party video conferencing app. For those on a paid plan, you can even share your screen with other participants.
