In Slack, channels are spaces where organization people can communicate and share information with other members. Anyone participating on the conversation can send messages and files to start discussions with others.
Having a channel with a lot of members can result in more clutter in the conversation. Thankfully, there’s a way for you to organize your discussions on the app in the form of threads.
Threads keeps your discussions in one place, so that everyone involved can check the previous replies without scrolling the conversation.
With that in mind, here’s our quick guide on how to start a thread on Slack.
How to use a thread in Slack
If you want to have organized discussions from specific messages on the conversation or channel on Slack, you can start a thread. In this way, you can discuss without messing up the chat.
You can start threads whether you’re using Slack on your computer or mobile device. Follow our quick guide below and we’ll show you the steps to do so on both.
On your computer:
- Open the Slack desktop app or web browser client and sign in to your account.
- Head to the channel or conversation where you want to start a thread.
- Hover to one of the messages and click the “Reply in thread” icon.
- Type your reply to the message and hit the Send button.
If you want other participants to see your reply on the conversation immediately, you can send the message to the channel or DM as well. To do so, check the box below the message before hitting the Send button.
If you already sent the reply, hover on the message, click the three dots icon, and select “Send reply to this channel.”
On your mobile device:
- Open Slack and sign in to one of your workspaces.
- Go to a channel or DM where you want to start a thread.
- Tap and hold on one of your messages and select the “Reply in thread” option on the menu.
- Type your reply at the bottom of the screen and hit the Send button.
If you want to send the reply to the channel or DM as well, tap the right arrow icon on the at the bottom of the message field and check the box that appears. After doing so, send the message to the conversation.
Please note that you’ll receive notifications whenever someone replies to the thread. If you want to notify other chat participants, you can mention them within the thread.
