Last Updated: June 26, 2021
Do you want to temporarily stop your followers from knowing what you’re currently playing on Spotify? Or do you want to listen and discover new music without your friends finding out? Either way, we’re here to help you. In our guide below, we’ll show you how to start a Private session on the Spotify app. Whether you’re listening with your computer or mobile device, we got you covered.
By default, anyone that follows you on Spotify can check the music you recently played on the Friend Activity section. With the help of this feature, your friends can know what songs you love on the app.
But if you want to hide your listening activity, you can choose to either turn off the feature on your Social Settings or start a Private session. The latter allows you to enter an anonymous listening session for some time. This feature is perfect for playing music that you don’t want your friends to know.
With that in mind, here’s our step-by-step guide on how to start a Private session on Spotify.
How to enable the Private session feature on Spotify
If you don’t want your followers or other users to know what song you’re currently playing, you can choose to start a Private Session on the Spotify app. In this way, you can enjoy listening to your favorite songs without worrying about other users bothering you.
You can start a Private Session on Spotify whether you’re using the mobile or desktop app. Either way, follow our quick tutorials below to learn how to do it from both versions.
On your computer:
- Launch the Spotify desktop app and sign in to your account.
- Click the drop-down arrow beside your profile icon on the upper-right side of your screen.
- On the menu that appears on your screen, click Private session.
After starting a Private Session, you’ll see a blue lock on the left side of your profile icon. This icon means that you’re currently listening anonymously.
To stop the anonymous listening feature, click your profile icon once again and select “Private session” on the menu.
On your phone:
- Launch the Spotify mobile app from your home screen or app drawer and sign in to your account.
- Make sure that you’re on the “Home” tab and tap the gear icon on the upper-right side of your screen to open your Settings.
- Scroll down to the “Social” section and toggle “Private session.”
Please note that you can’t start a Private session on the Spotify mobile app if you’re currently playing songs, podcasts, or others on the desktop or web app using your account.
It is also worth noting that the session automatically ends once you close and restart the app. It also ends after a long time of inactivity.
To wrap it all up
Now that you know how to start a Private session on Spotify, you can go ahead and listen anonymously on the app. With the help of this feature, you can hide your listening activity from your friends and other users that follow your account.
However, listening with the feature turned on might not affect your music recommendations from the app. It also turns off automatically after a period of inactivity or when you restart Spotify.
