We’ll show you how to create a reminder on your Slack workspace.

Tutorial

When your team uses Slack for communication regarding projects and work-related stuff, it is important that everyone is aware of the deadlines and urgent things you all need to do. Taking that into account, having a few reminders can help you work more effectively when using the app.

Thankfully, Slack allows its users to create reminders for themselves, other members, or a channel. As such, you can use the app to alert you instead of using a separate one for all your work-related reminders.

You can use the reminder feature on Slack with the help of a simple command. In our guide below, we’ll show you how to use it on your device.

How to create a reminder on your Slack workspace

If you have an important deadline to meet or an upcoming work-related meeting, you can set a reminder on Slack. You have the option to create a reminder for yourself, another workspace member, or to an entire channel.

You can create reminders on Slack whether you’re using your computer or mobile device. In our step-by-step tutorials below, we’ll show you how to do it on both devices.

On your computer:

  1. Launch the Slack desktop app or visit their web browser client and sign in to your account.
  2. Open one of your channels by clicking its name on the left side of your screen.
  3. Click the lightning bolt icon on the message field to access the shortcuts menu.

  4. Type “/remind” and select the command from the menu. Alternatively, you can press the Spacebar after typing “/remind.”

  5. Add the message and other details of your reminder in this format: /remind [@someone or #channel] [message] [when].

  6. Send the message to set the reminder.

You can choose to set your reminder after a few minutes, hours, on a set date, or as a schedule. For example, you can type: /remind @someone Reminder Every Tuesday.

However, you can only use the recurring option for yourself and not for channels or other users. To set a reminder for yourself, type “me” instead of mentioning someone or tagging a channel.

On your mobile device:

  1. Launch the Slack app from your home screen or app drawer and sign in to your account.
  2. Open one of your channels on your workspace.
  3. Tap the lightning bolt icon at the bottom-left corner of the screen to access your shortcuts.

  4. Type “/remind” and select “Set a reminder” from the search results.

  5. Add the reminder details in this format: /remind [@someone or #channel] [message] [when].

  6. Hit the Send button to set the reminder.

When you successfully created a reminder, you’ll see a post from Slackbot on the channel. This message is only visible to you, so you don’t have to worry about other channel members.

While you can set a reminder for both public and private channels, you can’t see name recommendations for the latter one. As such, you need to type the exact name of the private channel when setting a reminder to create one successfully.

To sum it all up

By using the “/remind” shortcut on Slack, you can set reminders for yourself, other members, or a channel on your workspace. Aside from creating work-related nudges, you can also remind your teammates to drink water, take a break, or have some fun from time to time.

Please note that all the reminders you create on Slack depend on your current time zone. As such, consider people from different locations and adjust accordingly if you ever need to.
