Without further ado, let’s get started.
How to restore your WhatsApp chat history on Android
If you’re planning to use a new phone and take your WhatsApp data with you or you’re just reinstalling it due to some app problems, you can always restore your backup from Google Drive (given that you have one in the first place).
- Open WhatsApp from your home screen or app drawer.
- Tap Agree and Continue.
- Enter your phone number and tap Next to continue.
- Tap OK to verify your phone number through an SMS verification code that you have to input on the app. But if the number you’re using on WhatsApp is also the one on the SIM card of your device, the app automatically fills up the code for you.
- When the app prompts you to find and restore your backup from Google Drive, tap Continue.
- Tap Restore. If you WhatsApp can’t find any backup from your Google Drive, it will automatically restore your chat history using your local backup files. Just remember that your phone will store only up to seven days worth of backup.
- After the app finishes loading your backup messages, tap Next.
- Add a name and an optional profile picture.
- Tap Next to complete restoring your backup.
Can you restore a backup from an iPhone to Android?
For iPhone users that wish to switch to Android that wants to bring their WhatsApp data on their new device, we got some bad news for you. This barrier goes for Android users that are planning to switch to an iPhone as well.
While WhatsApp on Android uses Google Drive to backup and restore your chat history, the iPhone version makes use of iCloud to do these. As such, you can’t use your backup between these two different kinds of devices.
Even if you have the Google Drive app on your iPhone, iOS devices only use iCloud as a backup for all of their data. Although there are some third-party apps you can use, we don’t recommend trusting them with your private and sensitive data.
Why can’t I restore my backup from Google Drive?
If you’re having trouble restoring your backup from Google Drive, there are a few things you have to verify. First of all, check if you’re using the correct phone number and Google account that you used as a backup option.
If you got the account and the phone number right, verify whether you have enough memory space on your device or not. Make sure to check if you have Google Play services installed on your phone as well.
In addition, you need a stable internet connection to restore a backup. If your mobile data doesn’t work, try connecting to the Wi-Fi.
To sum it all up
As long as you have a backup on Google Drive, you can always restore your chat history on WhatsApp. In turn, you won’t lose any of your messages, whether you change to a new device or reinstall the app on your current one.
However, restoring a backup from iPhone to Android and vice versa is nearly impossible since both of these kinds of devices use different cloud storage services. Although you can use some of the few third-party apps out there, we don’t trust them in handling your personal and private data.
