How To Rename Your Pokémon In Pokémon Brilliant Diamond/Shining Pearl
Last Updated: December 12, 2021
Being able to give your Pokémon a nickname is a feature that has been around ever since the games began. It doesn’t just add another layer of personalization, it also makes us feel more attached to these Pokémon as if they were our real pets. Here’s how you can change their names.
Anytime you catch a Pokémon, you are prompted to give them a nickname of your choosing. It can be any name at all as long as it’s within the parameters of the game’s profanity filter. You can choose to have fun nicknames or generic ones that can even include numbers. Nevertheless, naming your Pokémon is a key feature that everyone should take advantage of. However, what if some of us might have pressed the buttons too quickly and didn’t get a chance to name their Pokémon? Or what if we haven’t thought of a cool name yet at the time we captured these Pokémon? This is where the Name Rater comes into play.
The Name Rater is an NPC that has been around for as long as the Pokémon games’ existence. It is one of those NPCs that makes an appearance at every mainline Pokémon game. The Name Rater is a man who judges how suitable Pokémon nicknames are. Name Raters allow the players to change the nicknames of their Pokémon, as long as they are the original Trainer. So if you’ve received a Pokémon via trade, whether in game or from another player, you won’t be able to change their names.
Where is he located?
The Name Rater can be usually found in Towns or Cities that you have to go through as you progress in the game’s campaign. In Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, you can encounter the Name Rater relatively early on. He’s located in Eterna City, where you can find the 2nd gym.
In Eterna City, you’ll find the Name Rater living in Eterna Condominiums. From the Pokémon Center, make your way south until you pass Rad Rickshaw’s Cycle Shop. From there, you should be able to easily spot it. It’s right next to the Poké Mart so it’s pretty hard to miss.
How do you change your Pokémon’s name?
To change your Pokémon’s name, simply talk to the old man on the first floor of Eterna Condominium’s. He’s the titular Name Rater.
Then, he’ll ask you if you want him to rate one of your Pokémon’s nicknames. Say yes and you’ll be taken to the Box interface. You can choose Pokémon from your party or from your Boxes to have their name rated.
He’ll ask you if you want to give it a better name and from there, you can proceed to give it a name you desire.
Make sure to avoid foul words or profanities as the game has a built in filter for those kinds of words. Why would you even choose to name your sweet Pokémon with a curse word, right?
Once you’ve decided on a nickname, just hit “OK” and you’re done! You’ve changed your Pokémon’s nickname.
It’s all completely free and you can change your Pokémon’s name as many times as you like as long as it was you who captured them.
