Do you want to kick out inactive users from one of your Slack channels? Or did you accidentally invited the wrong member to your private conversation with another team? Either way, removing someone from a channel is pretty easy. Follow our quick guide below, and we’ll teach you everything you need to know about kicking members from a Slack channel.
In Slack, workspace members use channels to message and discuss with other users. While some channels are open to everyone in the workspace, you can limit the members on some of your private conversations.
With that in mind, it is a good idea to organize your Slack channels and remove the inactive members. In this way, you can protect the messages and files shared in the future from unauthorized people.
If you’re having some trouble navigating your channel details and finding the option to remove a user, don’t worry, we got you covered. All you have to do is read on and follow our guide below.
How to kick someone from one of your Slack channels
By default, workspace admins and owners can kick a member of a public channel. On the other hand, regular members can only remove someone on a private channel. As such, you’ll need to check first if you have the permission to kick users from a conversation on Slack.
You can remove users from a channel whether you’re using Slack on your computer or mobile device. With that in mind, here are our tutorials on doing it on both devices.
On your computer:
- Open the Slack web or desktop app and sign in to your workspace.
- Go to the channel (public or private) where you want to remove someone.
- Click the channel’s name at the top of the conversation header.
- Head to the Members tab and click the “Remove” option beside the user you want to remove from the channel.
- Click the Remove button to confirm your decision.
When you remove a member or guest from a channel, Slackbot notifies the individual immediately. If you can’t find the option to kick someone from a channel, ask the owner for help.
Owners can restrict the channel member removal permission by navigating to Workspace Settings > Permissions > Channel Management.
On your phone:
- Open Slack on your device and sign in to your workspace.
- Go to the channel where you want to kick another member.
- Type /remove @[member name] on the chat.
- Press the Send icon to confirm your decision.
As you can see, removing someone from a channel on the Slack mobile app is different from the desktop and web versions. Since there’s no option to do it on the channel details, you can only use the “/remove” command to manage your members.
You can also use this command to remove channel members on the Slack app on your computer. All you have to do is enter “/remove @[members name],” hit the Send button, and confirm your decision.
