How To Record The Screen On A Chromebook Without A Download
Last Updated: March 30, 2020
Is it possible to record screen on Chromebook without downloading a third party app? Does Chrome OS have the ability for screen recording like Windows 10? Can you record your screen without paying for a program to do it?
You can sort of record the screen on a Chromebook without a download. It’s a hack but you can do it. You can also take screenshots using Chrome OS. If you want to record the screen for a presentation or something that will be shared publicly, you may prefer to use an extension to do it but you won’t have to pay for it.
Record your Chromebook screen
To answer the original question, you can record the screen on a Chromebook without a download. You simply record what’s going on with your phone. You will need a very steady hand or a tripod but you can do it. The results won’t be amazing though. Even if you have a great quality camera on your phone, the recording will still look like you recorded your Chromebook screen with a phone. Less than perfect but it is a viable solution.
Does Chrome OS have the ability for screen recording like Windows 10?
The answer to this question is no. Chrome OS does not have a screen recorder like Windows 10. Windows only has one because it is trying to be all things to all people and has Xbox integration. You can use the Xbox Game Bar to record what’s going on with your screen in Windows 10 but Chromebook doesn’t have that feature.
Chrome OS has a different intention. To provide a reliable operating system that uses as few resources as possible to run on cheaper, more portable machines. In that it works exceptionally well but it does mean you don’t get all the bells and whistles of other operating systems.
Can you record your Chromebook screen without paying for a program?
You can record your Chromebook screen without paying for a program to do it. There are a bunch of extensions for Chrome that let you record the screen. I’ll list a few good ones below. All of them are free and work well within Chrome OS. They can make short work of recording what’s going on with your Chromecast screen and make the recording accessible afterwards.
Screencastify is one of the most popular screen recorders for Chrome. It’s a browser extension that works perfectly well on any machine that runs the browser. Install the extension, enable it, use the movie controls at the edge of your screen when ready and record. The extension also allows you to cast your recording while recording which is a neat trick.
Nimbus Screenshot & Screen Video Recorder
Nimbus Screenshot & Screen Video Recorder is another very popular screen recorder that would work on a Chromebook. It’s another Chrome extension that makes screen recording simple. It has simple controls, enables you to post edit and convert your video to a GIF or MP4. It’s pretty good at what it does and works reliably well.
Screen Recorder is another option for recording your Chromebook screen. It’s yet another Chrome extension that makes easy work of recording what goes on. It has a very simple interface that allows you to choose what you record and whether you include audio or not. It works reliably well and works offline as well as online. Well worth checking out.
Free Screencast Recording for Gmail
Free Screencast Recording for Gmail is slightly different in that it can still record your screen and create a video but will automatically embed a link to that video into a Gmail email. If you’re looking to share video or provide customer service, this removes one step from the process of recording, adding the video to Google Drive, collecting a link and sharing it via email.
Screen and Webcam Recorder
Screen and Webcam Recorder is a combination of screen recorder and social app. It allows you to record what goes on and saves it as a video but will also help you share it via email or social media. Once shared through the extension you can also track who views the video. That could be useful for schools or customer support functions.
It’s a shame Chrome OS doesn’t let you natively record your Chromebook screen but that isn’t what the OS is designed for. Chrome OS is designed for portability and to use as few resources as possible. In that it works perfectly. For everything else there are Chrome extensions and there, screen recording is well catered for.
