How To Play Vi In League Of Legends

Vi is a very versatile champion that can be played in more than one role. With the massive success of Arcane, in which Vi was placed centerstage, interest in this champion has been at an all time high. Here’s everything you need to know to get you started playing the Piltover Enforcer.

Fighters in League of Legends have two sub classes. These are Divers and Juggernauts. Divers, as its name implies, are champions that excel at diving the enemy team. It could be diving under towers or just diving their backlines at teamfights. Juggernauts, on the other hand, are fighters that get stronger the longer a fight goes on. Vi belongs to the former. Being a Diver, Vi is exceptional at getting to the enemy team’s backline and just wreaking havoc at their squishy carries. Combine this with her great crowd control plus her knack for dealing burst damage and you have a strong champion that literally embodies the diver class. Vi is a nightmare for squishy ADCs and mages everywhere, all across Summoner’s Rift.

Vi’s abilities are all about dealing as much damage as possible while sticking as closely as she can to her target. Her kit has pretty much everything she needs to  quickly eliminate the enemy team’s backline. From crowd control, burst damage, and mobility; you name it, Vi probably has it.

Passive – Blast Shield

Your activated abilities grant a shield equal to [+15% max] for 3 seconds when they hit an enemy.

This ability is a really good one to have, especially on a  champion like Vi. Since Vi is melee and specializes in diving, having a shield that she can proc whenever she hits an enemy with her abilities is useful for helping her stay alive. With this ability, she can often win duels and stay healthy whenever she clears camps in the Jungle.

Q – Vault Breaker

Charges a powerful punch that carries Vi forward.

First Cast: Slows Movement Speed by 15% while increasing damage and dash range over 1.25 seconds.

Second Cast: Dashes forward dealing physical damage and applying Denting Blows to all enemies hit. Stops upon colliding with an enemy champion, knocking it back.

Vault Breaker is Vi’s most important ability. It is her main source of mobility, engage, disengage, and crowd control. You’ll be using this most of the time to start a gank or whenever you start to clear a camp. It’s a very strong ability that can interrupt the enemy team’s mobility if you timed it right. With this, Vi can easily catch up to her targets and deal some pretty decent damage as well.

W – Denting Blows

Every 3rd attack on the same target deals an additional physical damage, reduces its Armor by 20% and grants Vi Attack Speed for 4 seconds (max 300 damage vs. monsters). Triggering Denting Blows reduces the cooldown of Blast Shield by 3 seconds.

Vault Breaker may be Vi’s most important ability, but Denting Blows is Vi’s strongest source of damage. After 3 attacks on the same target, its armor gets reduced and gives Vi an Attack Speed boost. This overall increases Vi’s DPS. If you can, try to trigger this ability first before moving on with your other abilities.

E – Excessive Force

Causes next basic attack to deal physical damage to the target and enemies behind it. Vi periodically charges a new punch periodically and can hold 2 charges at once.

This ability really lives up to its name. Vi basically punches a target so hard that enemies around it are damaged as well. Talk about hardcore, right? This is Vi’s main source of wave clear so try to angle it perfectly to maximize its damage output and make your clear times faster in the Jungle.

R – Assault and Battery

Targets an enemy champion and unstoppably chases it down, knocking it up for 1.3 seconds, dealing physical damage. While charging, Vi has True Sight of the target. Any enemies in the way are damaged and knocked aside.

As if all her other abilities aren’t enough to help Vi stick to her target, Assault and Battery literally lets her lock on and pin down a single target. This is an incredible ability to have and one that you should learn to master. Although it is easy to use, you need to understand the right timing of when to use this ability. When used correctly, it can guarantee you a kill every time you use it.

Runes and Item Abilities

When it comes to items and runes, all you should focus on is increasing Vi’s burst and survivability. She needs to deal damage while also being durable enough to stay alive.

Starting Items

While Vi can be played as Top Laner as well, she is better off in the Jungle. As such, the best starting items for her are either Emberknife or Hailblade. Emberknife is the superior choice in our opinion as it turns your smite into Challenging Smite. This lets Vi deal increased damage to targets she smites. The other option would be Hailblade which isn’t all that bad. It turns your smite into Chilling Smite which slows down targets hit by the summoner spell. Take a Refillable Potion with you and a Ward then you’re good to go in the Jungle.

Mythic Items

When it comes to your Mythic item, you have two choices. The better overall choice is Divine Sunderer. This item gives you the spellblade passive which enhances your basic attack right after using an ability. Not only that, Divine Sunderer lets you shred tanks as well as squishy targets. If you feel like you need more sustain over the damage that Divine Sunderer provides, then go for Goredrinker. This ability has an active that restores your health depending on how many targets you hit with it. What you choose depends on your situation or preference. But, if you’re unsure, you can’t go wrong with Divine Sunderer.

Full Build

After you’ve purchased your desired Mythic, you have to go with upgrading your boots next. Plated Steelcaps is the go to option but if the enemy team has a lot of magic damage and/or crowd control, don’t hesitate to go with Mercury’s Treads instead. Your next core item is Sterak’s Gage. This gives you health, damage, and a cool passive that gives you a shield whenever you’re low on health. Thornmail is up next for the armor, health, and the return damage. Death’s Dance comes right after Thornmail. This item gives you damage and has a passive that delays the damage you receive which is perfect for diving enemies. Finish off your build with Guardian Angel for the damage, armor, and survivability.

Other Viable Items

Being a Fighter, Vi’s build path is actually quite flexible. There are plenty of other items that you can build on her. Let’s take a look at some other viable options you have when playing as Vi.

  • Black Cleaver – This is a great item for Vi because it gives her both damage, health, and the ability to shred armor stacking tanks.
  • Chempunk Chainsword – Since heals and shields are pretty OP in League of Legends, having an item like this which can reduce the efficiency of healing is great.
  • Titanic Hydra – Gives you health, damage, and wave clear.
  • Maw of Malmortius – This item works very similarly to Sterak’s Gage but gives you more magic resist and a spell shield.

We encourage you to mix and match to see which items would work best for you when you’re using Vi.

For your runes, go with the Domination tree and take Hail of Blades as your keystone. This will allow you to proc Denting Blows faster which will, in turn, increase your overall burst damage. Then take Sudden Impact for the bonus lethality whenever you dash, Eyeball Collection for the additional damage, and Relentless Hunter  for the bonus movement speed you get out of combat whenever you score a takedown. For your secondaries, take Triumph and Legend: Alacrity from the Precision tree. For rune shards, take Attack Speed, Adaptive Force, and Armor.

Useful Tips

  1. You can actually use Vault Breaker to go through thin walls. Try to use this to your advantage to make a quick escape or to catch opponents off guard when planning to gank.
  2. Vi is countered by champions that can kill her mobility or prevent her from getting too close to her targets. Champions like Amumu, Rammus, Poppy, Volibear, and Nunu & Willump are her biggest counters.
  3. For your summoner spells, always take Flash and Smite. Flash gives you a lot of utility while Smite lets you clear jungle camps faster and secure objectives like Baron or Dragon.
