How To Play Valir In Mobile Legends

Valir is a great mage for beginners that has everything you could possibly want from the role. He is easy to use and has a relatively easy to understand kit. Here’s everything you need to know to get you started playing the Son of Flames.

Gaming

Overview

Valir is a burst mage with a decently long range and very good crowd control. Apart from his burst damage, he also deals sustained damage over time thanks to his passive. This mage thrives on keeping his opponents from getting too close and controlling the pace of a fight. All of his targeted abilities deal area of effect damage so he is pretty good at pushing lanes and clearing waves. This also makes him a powerful hero in team fights being able to hit more than one target at a time. Top these all off with a built in ‘Purify’ in his ultimate and you have a very safe mage that can turn into a late game core.

Despite all the good things in his kit, Valir isn’t one without weakness. Like most mages, Valir is pretty squishy and can be killed off in one shot by an assassin with a strong burst. His abilities can also be difficult to land in succession. Mobile heroes, in particular, can easily dodge Valir’s abilities. Overall, Valir is still a good mage but works better in a situation tailored to his strengths.

Abilities

Valir’s whole theme is being a fire mage. As such, his abilities are imbued with a ‘burning’ effect that deals damage over time. Looking at his kit, you’ll see that Valir is a control mage meant to deal damage from afar and prevent enemies from getting close.

Passive – Ashing

When Valir hits a target with his skills, he will apply 1 stack of Blaze to the target and deal Magic Damage equal to 0.6% of their Max HP that lasts for 4 seconds.

When the Blaze stacks to 3 times on a target, it causes an explosion that deals Magic Damage to the target equals to 6% of their Max HP and stuns the target for 1 second.

This is the main reason why Valir is a strong mage. You will be using your abilities to proc this passive all the time. It’s his main source of damage and how you use it will separate you from bad Valir players.

First Skill – Burst Fireball

Valir casts a fireball at a designated direction and the fireball will explode upon hitting an enemy, dealing 235 / 270 / 305 / 340 / 375 / 410 (+80% Total Magic Power) Magic Damage to enemies within the explosion range and slowing them by 40% for 1 second. Meanwhile, it ignites the ground along the way, which leads to an explosion after several seconds, dealing 118 / 135 / 153 / 170 / 188 / 205 (+40% Total Magic Power) Magic Damage to enemies within the area of effect.

Valir gains 1 fireball every 8.5 seconds and can stack the fireball up to 2 times. Restore time for the fireball is affected by cooldown reduction. If the fireball hits an enemy hero, Valir will restore a fireball immediately.

Vengeance Flame Enhancement: Valir will enhance this skill’s range and increase the damage to 325 / 378 / 427 / 426 / 525 / 574 (+40% Total Magic Power) Magic Damage to enemies, while the explosion damage will increase to 165.2 / 189 / 214.2 / 238 / 263.2 / 287 (+40% Total Magic Power) Magic Damage.

This is Valir’s main damaging ability. You’ll be using this to poke opponents down and harass them when they’re hiding behind their minion wave. It has good crowd control and procs the burn effect from Valir’s passive, Ashing.

Second Skill – Searing Torrent

Valir unleashes a torrent of flames forward, knocking enemies back and dealing 200 / 220 / 240 / 260 / 280 / 300 (+60% Total Magic Power) points of Magic Damage to them.

Vengeance Flame Enhancement: Valir will increase the damage of this skill to 260 / 286 / 312 / 338 / 364 / 390 (+52% Total Magic Power) Magic Damage and generate a firewall at its edge that lasts for 4 seconds. If an enemy is hit by the firewall, they will be slowed by 25% for 1 second and take Template:80 (+24% Total Magic Power) Magic Damage every 1 second.

This is Valir’s main crowd control ability. This ability sends a wave of flames forward that knocks back enemies and keeps them at bay. It can be very disruptive in a team fight and is good for keeping Valir safe from heroes that try to dive him. In its enhanced form, it becomes even more useful in a team fight as the wave of flames linger on as a wall of fire that damages anyone passing through it. This ability is also perfect for setting up multi stuns with Burst Fireball and Ashing.

Ultimate – Vengeance Flame

Valir removes all CC effects from him and condenses 4 Vengeance Flames around himself and increases his Movement Speed by 50%, decaying over 5 seconds.

The Vengeance Flames will enhance Burst Fireball and Searing Torrent and increase Valir’s damage by 30% for 9 seconds.

This is what makes Valir a very good control mage. Vengeance Flame increases his overall damage while enhancing his other abilities with bonus effects. Not only that, upon activation, Vengeance Flame increases his range and movement speed while removing all crowd control effects around him.

Builds

When it comes to item builds, it’s always important to focus on the strengths of the hero you are using. In this case, Valir’s strengths are sustained damage. Items that give Magic Power while also enhancing the effects of his abilities are perfect for a hero like Valir. While more or less, you’ll be running the same builds, there are three items we consider essential on every build you decide to go with. These core items are Glowing Wand, Ice Queen Wand, and Necklace of Durance.

  • Glowing Wand

+400 HP

+75 Magic Power

+5% Movement SPD

Unique Passive – Scorch: Skill Damage will burn the targets for 3s, dealing 1% of the target’s Max HP as Magic Damage per second (damaging the same target multiple times within a short duration can increase this damage to 2% at most), 10 damage minimum.

  • Ice Queen Wand

+75 Magic Power

+10% Magic Lifesteal

+150 Mana

+7% Movement SPD

Unique Passive – Ice Bound: Skills that deal damage to an enemy hero will slow them by 15%. This effect lasts 3s. Stacks up to 2 times.

  • Necklace of Durance

+60 Magic Power

+10% Magic Lifesteal

+5% CD Reduction

Unique Passive – Life Drain: Upon dealing damage to the target, reduces Shield and HP Regen of the target by 50% for 3s.

All these items increase Valir’s Magic Power while enhancing the other aspects of his abilities. Glowing Wand makes his damage over time from the burning effect of Ashing stronger. Ice Queen Wand gives his abilities a bonus slow which is great since both Burst Fireball and Searing Torrent have pretty wide areas of effect. Necklace of Durance gives Valir’s abilities more anti healing properties.

Useful Tips

  1. For your emblem, go with the Mage set and take Magic Worship as your talent. This allows you to deal more burn damage to your enemy whenever you consistently hit them with your abilities.
  2. For your battle spell, you can go with either Flicker or Sprint. Flicker is the safer choice as it is an all purpose spell that can help you easily get away or get in range of your opponent. Sprint is also a good choice since it gives you a huge movement speed boost which you can use to reposition or escape opponents.
  3. Valir is countered by heroes that can easily get to him to either deal damage or to use crowd control. Heroes like Karina, Kaja, Franco, and Barats are examples of heroes that can easily counter him.
