How To Play Twisted Fate In League Of Legends
Last Updated: August 3, 2022
League of Legends is a game with a lot of macromechanics that you need to learn in order to succeed. If you’re looking for a champion to brush up on your fundamentals, then you came to the right place! In this guide, we’ll show you everything you need to know to get you started playing Twisted Fate, the Card Master.
Gaming
Twisted Fate is one of the most useful champions in League of Legends. The sheer utility he brings to the table is almost unparalleled among League’s roster of champions. He has great wave clear, good crowd control, and a powerful presence around the map. Vision is very important in League of Legends and Twisted Fate can give you a ton of vision thanks to his kit. He is a very versatile champion and he is worth sinking your time into if you’re serious about honing your skills as a player.
Abilities
The core of Twisted Fate’s kit is all about macro; you need to have excellent map awareness to pull off his abilities. His abilities are deceptively simple to use but hard to master.
Passive – Loaded Dice

Upon killing a unit, Twisted Fate rolls his ‘lucky’ dice receiving anywhere between 1 and 6 bonus gold.
TF’s passive is simple enough. It lets you get bonus gold whenever you kill a unit, incentivizing you to last hit minions.
Q – Wild Cards

Throws three cards that deal magic damage to each enemy unit they pass through.
This is your main source of wave clear and poke in lane. Opposing champions can’t hide behind minions since this ability goes through them. It’s rather easy to use but can be hard to land on your first few tries.
W – Pick a Card

Cast once to shuffle the deck and again to choose your card, enhancing your next attack. Each card deals magic damage with a bonus effect: Blue Card restores Mana, Red Card deals damage to units around the target and slows their Movement Speed for 2.5 seconds, Gold Card deals stuns.
This ability is your bread and butter when playing as Twisted Fate. You need to master the timing in order for you to not mess it up. It’s quite a difficult ability to use but easy to get the hang of.
E – Stacked Deck

Passive: Every 4 attacks, Twisted Fate deals additional magic damage. In addition, his Attack Speed is increased.
Another passive ability in Twisted Fate’s kit. Stacked Deck allows you to deal more damage with your basic attacks while also increasing your attack speed.
R – Destiny/Gate

Destiny: Grants True Sight on all enemy champions on the map for a short duration.
Gate: While Destiny is active, Twisted Fate can teleport in 1.5 seconds.
This is the biggest reason why Twisted Fate is considered a “macro” champion. You need to have excellent map awareness to use this ability efficiently. It’s first part, Destiny, gives you vision of where everyone on the enemy team is located the moment you use it. You can then make plays around the map by using Gate to teleport for a gank or to finish off low health targets.
Runes and Item Builds
When it comes to items, your focus on Twisted Fate is to increase his overall damage by buying ability power items.
Starting Items

Twisted Fate has a rather weak early game so he is best starting off with a Corrupting Potion. This gives him a stronger presence early on by allowing him to sustain and deal bonus damage when trading against his opponent. If you feel like you don’t need the sustain and would rather have early ability power, then you can go for Doran’s Ring instead.
Mythic Item

For your Mythic Item, there are really only two choices: Everfrost or Luden’s Tempest. Both are really good items on Twisted Fate and give off similar stats. The differences lie in the bonus ability it gives. Everfrost is the better option as it adds another layer of utility thanks to the active root/slow it provides. If you feel like you have enough crowd control on your team, then by all means go for Luden’s Tempest instead for the burst damage it provides.
Full Build

After purchasing your desired Mythic, it’s time to upgrade into tier 2 boots. Twisted Fate has a bit of trouble with long cooldowns in the early game so your boots of choice should be Ionian Boots of Lucidity for the ability haste it provides. Next, you need Rapidfire Cannon because it syncs with your empowered basic attack whenever you can use your W and E at the same time. Next go for Lich Bane for the same reasons but with bonus ability power. At this point you’ll need some survivability so this is where Zhonya’s Hourglass comes into play. Finally, top off your build with Mejai’s Soulstealer for the bonus damage it provides.
Runes

For runes, go with the Domination tree and take Electrocute as your keystone. This will increase your burst damage whenever you hit an enemy with your combos. Next, take Taste of Blood for the heal, Eyeball Collection for the bonus damage, and Treasure Hunter to give you additional gold. For secondaries, take Minion Dematerializer and Time Warp Tonic from the Inspiration tree. These will help you keep up with your opponent in the early game. For rune shards, take Attack Speed, Adaptive Force, and Magic Resist.
Useful Tips
- Remember to coordinate with your team whenever you use Destiny to set up a great ambush opportunity.
- Twisted Fate is countered by Irelia, Zed, Yasuo, Swain, and Gangplank. If you’re matched up against these champions, try to play it safe instead of being aggressive.
- For your summoner spells, take Flash and Ignite to give you more utility and to help you secure early leads. If you want to play it safe, you can swap out Ignite for Exhaust, Barrier, or Cleanse.
