How To Play Roger In Mobile Legends

Roger is one of the best Fighter/Marksman in Mobile Legends. His combination of attack speed, burst damage, and overall versatility makes him a highly contested pick in most matches. Here’s everything you need to know to get you started playing the Dire Wolf Hunter.

Gaming

Overview

Roger owns the distinction of being the only Fighter/Marksman in the entirety of MLBB’s Hero roster. Because of his unique capabilities, he is viable in three roles: Jungler, Gold Laner, or EXP Laner. This versatility allows him to fit nearly any team composition. As a side laner, Roger can be a self-sustaining pusher with a lot of mobility, excellent wave clear, and decent burst damage. The same can be said for his capacity as a Jungler. He can easily clear jungle camps, secure objectives, and is mobile enough to initiate ganks that can lead to kills. Despite all his strengths, he is not without weakness. For a champion whose effectiveness is tied to diving straight into fights, his durability is a little lacking. He also doesn’t have any form of reliable crowd control so this could pose an issue when against slippery or mobile enemies. Overall, Roger is a pretty great Hero whose pros severely outweigh the cons.

Abilities

Roger’s kit revolves around switching between his two forms and using his transformations to his advantage.

Passive – Full Moon Curse

In human form, Roger’s Basic Attack slows enemies down by 10%. In wolf form, his Basic Attack deals extra damage that equals to 5% of enemies’ lost HP (Up to 60 extra damage to Creeps).

You can use the human form to kite enemies, and the wolf form to fight.

Roger’s passive is pretty self explanatory. His Basic Attacks in human form is perfect for kiting and his wolf form is great for duels or finishing off targets.

First Skill – Open Fire/Lycan Pounce

Open Fire: Roger rapidly shoots twice, dealing [for a total of] 300-600 (+120% Total Physical Attack) Physical Damage to enemies hit. The first Hunter Net slows enemies by 80% for 1.5 seconds. The second one (Bullet) reduces Physical Defense by 10-30 for 5 seconds.

Lycan Pounce: Roger jumps towards the target, dealing 300-600 (+120% Total Physical Attack) Physical Damage to up to 3 enemies. In the meantime, he won’t take any damage from enemies. Kill or assist will reduce the cooldown of this skill by 80%.

Roger’s first skill varies depending on his form. In human form, it becomes Open Fire which is a great burst damage ability. In his wolf form, this skill turns into Lycan Pounce. This skill allows Roger to instantly dash towards an enemy and deals a huge chunk of damage. Both skills cost a fair amount of mana and should be used in moderation in the early game.

Second Skill – Hunter’s Steps/Bloodthirsty Howl

Hunter’s Steps: Roger increases his Movement Speed by 40% for 2.5 seconds.

Bloodthirsty Howl: Roger lets out a howl, increasing his own Attack Speed by 15-40% for 5 seconds. During the effect, if there is an enemy with less than 40%HP in his vision, his Movement Speed will be increased by 50%.

Roger’s second skills are both buffs. In human form, it only increases his Movement Speed which is good for escaping, kiting, and chasing down targets. In wolf form, Roger receives a huge buff to his attack speed. Additionally, his movement speed will increase when there are low health targets near him.

Ultimate – Wolf Transformation

Human Form – Active: Roger lunges forward and turns into a wolf, dealing 200-500 (+100% Total Physical Attack) Physical Damage to enemies in his area and slowing them down by 90% for 0.8 second.

Passive: In Wolf Form, Roger gains 20-60 Physical Defense.png Physical Defense and Magic Defense.png Magic Defense and 25 Movement Speed.

Wolf Form: Roger rolls in a designated direction and reverts to human, gaining 200-350 (+200% Total Physical Attack) Shield that lasts for 1.5 seconds.

Unlike most heroes, Roger’s ultimate is already available at the start of the game. This is what allows him to change between his wolf and human form. Mastering the timing of this ability is the key to its effectiveness. Learning when you should and shouldn’t transform is an important part that you need to understand when playing Roger.

Builds

The builds for Roger are slightly different, depending on the role and lane you’re playing at. If you’re playing as a Jungler, you would need Tough Boots to reduce the duration of crowd control used on you. Of course you would need the blessing on your boots, in this case, the best choice would be Ice Retribution. The two common items you’ll find in all builds are the core items on Roger. These are War Axe and Endless Battle. Let’s take a look at what each of them do.

  • War Axe

+35 Physical ATK
+550 HP
+10% CD Reduction

Unique Passive – Fighting Spirit: Dealing damage to enemies grants 9 Physical Attack and 3 Physical Penetration per second for 3s, to a max of 8 stacks (Marksmen/MAges/Supports only receive 33% of these stacked effects); also grants 15% Movement Speed at full stacks.

  • Endless Battle

+65 Physical ATK
+5 Mana Regen
+250 HP
+10% CD Reduction
+5% Movement SPD
+10% Physical Lifesteal

Unique Passive – Divine Justice: In 3s after using the skill, the caster’s next Basic Attack will deal additional True Damage as much as 60% of Physical Attack with a cooldown of 1.5s.

Unique Passive – Chase Fate: When Divine Justice’s effect is triggered, it will increase the hero’s movement speed 10%.

Both of these items play to Roger’s strength. War Axe increases his overall damage output the longer fights go on, while Endless Battle, gives him sustain through lifesteal and bonus damage on his basic attack right after using an ability.

Useful Tips

  1. For Battle Spells, take Retribution when you’re jungling and Flicker when you’re heading into a lane.
  2. For Emblems, Assassin emblems are the most effective on Roger with Killing Spree as your main talent.
  3. Roger is weak against heroes like Freya and Karina. These champions have abilities that can undermine Roger’s effectiveness in a game.
