How To Play Kled In League Of Legends
Last Updated: May 19, 2022
Kled was a very fun champion released back in 2016 and still remains one of the strongest fighters in the game. Here’s everything you need to know to get you started playing the Cantankerous Cavalier.
If there ever was a champion that rewards players for playing aggressively any chance they can get, it would be Kled. His strong kit lets him be a powerful duelist with lots of all in potential as early as level 3. He is durable enough to dive his lane opponents even when under a tower. He excels in situations that escalate into a full blown skirmish that allows him to showcase the strength of his kit.
Kled’s abilities are all about dealing damage and helping him stick to his target better.
Passive – Skaarl, the Cowardly Lizard
Skaarl takes damage instead of Kled. When Skaarl’s health depletes. Kled dismounts. Bonus health applies to Skaarl only.
This is the biggest reason why Kled is so strong when it comes to dueling. It’s pretty self-explanatory so we won’t dwell on this too much. Basically, Kled’s trusty mount, Skaarl, takes the damage for him instead of Kled. Once Skaarl’s health depletes, Kled will become vulnerable.
Q – Bear Trap on a Rope
Kled throws a bear trap that deals physical damage and hooks onto the first enemy champion or epic monster hit. Deals 150% damage to minions passed through. If Kled stays near a hooked enemy for 1.75 seconds, he deals physical damage, yanks the enemy toward him, slows the enemy for 1.45 seconds, and reduces incoming healing on them by 60% for 5 seconds.
Bear Trap on a Rope is Kled’s best method of sticking to his targets. It allows him to deal consistent damage and lets him go for extended trades.
W – Violent Tendencies
Passive: When Kled basic attacks, he frenzies, gaining 150% Attack Speed for four attacks or 4 seconds. Violent Tendencies then goes on cooldown. The fourth hit deals bonus physical damage.
Violent Tendencies is your main trading ability. It’s a passive ability but it greatly increases Kled’s DPS. Weaving in basic attacks in your combos is what makes Kled a very powerful champion.
E – Jousting
Kled dashes, dealing physical damage to enemies in his path. Cannot cross walls. If Jousting hits an enemy champion or large monster, Kled gains 50% Movement Speed for 1 second, and can reactivate to dash back through the same target, dealing the same damage.
Jousting is Kled’s main mobility spell. It’s great when used in combo with Bear Trap on a Rope. Use this to stick to your target or to make a quick escape from a sticky situation.
R – Chaaaaaaaarge!!!
Kled charges toward a location, leaving a trail that grants allies increasing Movement Speed. While charging, Kled gains a shield that increases over time and lasts for 2 seconds after the charge ends. Skaarl rams the first enemy champion encountered, dealing physical damage based on distance traveled.
Kled’s ultimate is great for initiating fights or just crashing an existing gank. The bonus move speed plus the shield makes it absolutely insane and can be a potential game changer in team fights.
Runes and Item Builds
When it comes to items, your focus would be to increase Kled’s damage, sustain, and durability.
For starting items, you have two options. You can start with Doran’s Blade for more damage or you can start with Doran’s Shield if you need more durability and sustain. Personally, we’d go with Doran’s Blade but we’ll go for Doran’s Shield if the lane opponent is ranged.
For your Mythic item, you have three choices. The best option out of all three is Goredrinker because it gives you all the stats you need plus an active that restores your health based on how many enemy champions you hit with it. It’s perfect for Kled since he likes to dive into the thick of fights. Divine Sunderer and Sunfire Aegis are solid options as well but we’ll stick with Goredrinker if you’re unsure of what to buy.
After purchasing your desired Mythic, go for tier 2 boots. The standard is Plated Steelcaps but you can swap it out for Mercury’s Treads if you need to. Next, go for Hullbreaker to give you damage, resistances, and allows you to easily clear towers. Next you’ll need Black Cleaver and Titanic Hydra. Black Cleaver helps you shred the enemy’s armor while Titanic Hydra gives you both health and damage plus a wave clear passive. Finish off your build with Death’s Dance for even more damage and survivability.
Other Viable Items
While the full build we’ve shown above is generally considered the standard for Kled, it is not set in stone. There are plenty of other items that you can purchase depending on your preference or what your situation currently needs. Items like Sterak’s Gage, Gargoyle Stoneplate, Thornmail, and Dead Man’s Plate are all good items to have especially if you’re leaning towards being more of a tank. Try to mix and match these item sets to see what works best for you. Doing so will help you develop a better understanding of the game’s deeper mechanics.
For your runes, go with the Precision tree and take Conqueror as your keystone. Conqueror will allow you to get more sustain and lets you deal more damage in extended fights. Next, take Triumph for the sustain, Legend: Tenacity to help you stick to targets better, and Last Stand to help you deal more damage when you are low on health. For secondaries, take Demolish and Bone Plating from the Resolve tree. Demolish lets you deal more damage to towers while Bone Plating increases your resistances. For rune shards, take Attack Speed, Adaptive Force, and Armor.
- Kled generates courage by killing minions and fighting champions. So, don’t be afraid to commit in fights as this champion gets stronger when he finds himself backed into a corner.
- Kled is countered by Illaoi and Fiora. If you’re matched up against these champions, try to play it safe instead of being aggressive.
- For summoner spells, always take Flash and Teleport. This will give you additional mobility and lets you have a global presence around the map.
