How To Play Kayle In League Of Legends
Last Updated: October 9, 2021
Do you want to play scaling champions but don’t have the patience to learn the mechanics of an ADC? If yes, then we have the perfect champion for you. In this guide, we’ll show you everything you need to know to get you started playing Kayle, the Righteous.
Ever since her mini-rework, Kayle has been an absolute monster especially in the late game. She’s been reworked from a burst mage to a full on DPS hyper carry. Thanks to the changes, Kayle turned into a powerful pick at top and mid. She’s an excellent champion in the current meta and can solo carry games as long as she reaches the late game.
Kayle’s abilities are focused on helping her scale into the late game. You’ll mostly be relying on the damage and attack speed you gain from her passive once it takes effect.
Passive – Divine Ascent
Kayle’s attacks are empowered by the heavens as she levels up and spends skill points. Her wings are lit aflame as she progressively gains Attack Speed, Movement Speed, Attack Range, and waves of fire on her attacks.
- Level 1 – Zealous: Basic attacks increase Attack Speed by 6% (+1% per 100) for 3 seconds, stacking up to 5 times. At max stacks Kayle becomes Exalted, gaining 8% bonus Movement Speed while Exalted.
- Level 6 – Arisen: Attack range is increased to 625.
- Level 11 – Aflame: Exalted attacks launch fire waves that deal magic damage.
- Level 16 – Transcendent: Become permanently Exalted and gain an additional 50 bonus range, for a total of 575 attack range on basic attacks.
As you can see, Kayle’s passive is what makes her such a great champion in the late game. She’s literally designed to be weak early and stronger as the game goes on.
Q – Radiant Blast
Kayle fires a celestial sword that stops on the first enemy hit, dealing magic damage and slowing them for 2 seconds. It also removes 15% of Armor and Magic Resist from all targets hit for 4 seconds.
Kayle’s only form of crowd control. This is best used defensively before level 6 or offensively in moderation as a ranged poke. Later in the game, it’s great for chasing down and focusing high priority targets.
W – Celestial Blessing
Kayle infuses herself and an allied champion with light, restoring health and granting move speed for 2 seconds.
This is best used as a sustain to help Kayle stay in lane. Since Kayle lacks a true form of escape, this can help you get out of sticky situations.
E – Starfire Spellblade
Passive: Kayle’s attacks deal additional magic damage.
Active: Kayle’s next attack becomes ranged and deals additional magic damage based on the target’s missing health. When Kayle reaches level 11, this attack explodes once it hits the target, dealing damage to surrounding enemies.
This is essentially an auto attack reset that gives Kayle a ranged auto attack. You’ll be maxing this first since it syncs with your passive and it helps you last hit minions or trade with your opponent in the laning phase.
R – Divine Judgement
Kayle makes an allied champion invulnerable. She then purifies the area around them dealing magic damage to nearby enemies.
A really powerful ultimate that makes Kayle a strong counter against assassins. Use this to prevent yourself or an ally from being killed while also dealing strong AoE damage to your enemies.
Runes and Item Builds
Kayle’s rune and item builds are all geared to help her get stronger in the late game. You’ll mostly build attack speed and ability power items to make the most out of her powerful passive. While she can be built either AP or AD or even a hybrid of both, she works best when built AP since all of her abilities scale better with ability power.
Kayle starts the game like any other mage. You go with a Doran’s Ring and a couple of Health Potions. Doran’s Ring gives you a bit of ability power and some mana regeneration. Additionally, it grants bonus damage to minions so it will help you farm. Your focus for most of the early game is to farm minions to help you get your items for the late game. You don’t want to be aggressive since Kayle is very weak before her power spikes. Basically, you won’t have as much of an impact until you reach at least level 6.
The best Mythic Item for Kayle is Riftmaker. The ability power and omnivamp from this item gives Kayle a lot of damage and sustain. It makes her very effective during team fights and is the overall better item for Kayle, especially if you’re playing mid. The other option would be to get Kraken Slayer. Kraken Slayer is a great item on her since it gives her more attack speed and more on hit damage. You can choose to build Kayle AD when you have enough magic damage on your team and could use another ADC.
Kayle is one of those champions who don’t need to rush their Mythic as their first item. Since she can’t benefit from the effects of these Mythic Items early on, it’s better to start building other items that compliment her playstyle. As a general rule of thumb, Kayle always builds a Nashor’s Tooth first for its bonus ability power, attack speed, and on hit effects. For boots, take Berserker’s Greaves for the attack speed. At this point in the game, you’ll probably have access to ranged basic attacks so you can now go for your desired Mythic Item. After, you stock up on more AP items to increase your damage. If you’re ahead, you can build a Rabadon’s Deathcap to capitalize on your lead. If you’re a little behind and need some survivability, build a Zhonya’s Hourglass first. Finish off your build with a Void Staff for more AP and additional magic penetration.
Other Viable Items
Kayle generally benefits from items that give Attack Speed or Ability Power. Items like Lich Bane and Morellonomicon work well with her and can be swapped out for some of her items. If you’re dealing with pesky burst mages or champions with a lot of crowd control who target you first in a team fight, you can opt to buy a Banshee’s Veil for it’s spell shield passive and bonus ability power. Wit’s End is also a very good item to build especially if you’re against a AP heavy team. If you’re building AD and decided to go with Kraken Slayer, it would be better for you to stock up on AD items preferably with Attack Speed. Phantom Dancer, Infinity Edge, Bloodthirster, or Rapid Firecannon are all viable items for a full AD build. Mix and match these items and see which ones will work for you.
For runes, you need to go with the Precision tree and take Press the Attack as your keystone. It enables you to deal more damage every three attacks and with all the attack speed from your abilities and items, you’ll always be proccing Press the Attack. Next, take Presence of Mind for the mana sustain, Legend: Alacrity for more attack speed, and Last Stand to help you gain an advantage in close call situations. For secondaries, go with the Resolve tree and take Bone Plating and Overgrowth to increase your survivability. For rune shards, take Attack Speed, Adaptive Force, and either Armor or Magic Resist depending on your matchup.
- Remember to choose wisely on who to cast Divine Judgement on. Using it on a high DPS ally can turn the tides of a teamfight by essentially giving them free reign to attack.
- Kayle is incredibly weak before her power spikes so make sure to play it safe and just farm minions to help you scale into the late game.
- For your summoner spells, always take Flash and Teleport. Exhaust, Ignite, or Ghost are all good alternatives for Teleport but only in certain situations.
