Overview
If you’re looking for a hero to help you learn how to play a mage, you can’t go wrong with Gord. Like most mages, Gord is squishy and immobile but deals excellent burst damage. He also has really good crowd control and can pretty much carry the game when ahead. By playing Gord, you’ll learn how to be patient and how to pick your spots as a mage. Positioning is key when playing immobile mages since you’ll mostly need to deal your damage from afar. You’ll learn how to predict where your enemies are going and you’ll learn all the creative ways on how you can stay alive in the heat of battle. On top of all of these, Gord is actually easy to play. His kit and mechanics are fairly straightforward, requiring you to mostly rely on macro knowledge about the game. If you have a decent understanding of the game’s fundamentals, you’ll have no trouble picking up Gord.
Abilities
Gord’s abilities all revolve around dealing a ton of magic damage. He has a lot of wide ranged burst in his kit that allows him to damage enemy heroes from afar.
Passive – Mystic Favor

Whenever Gord deals 4 instances of damage to a target in a short duration, the target is dealt with an additional 160 (+70% Total Magic Power) True Damage.
Gord’s passive is pretty basic. The more he attacks an enemy hero, the more damage he will deal. This passive rewards patient players who can effectively land Gord’s abilities.
First Skill – Mystic Projectile

Gord throws a mystic projectile at a designated area that bounces forward twice. Upon coming in contact with an enemy unit, the projectile deals 270 / 315 / 360 / 405 / 450 / 495 (+80% Total Magic Power Magic Damage in the area and stunning enemy units for 1 second.
This is Gord’s primary damaging ability. It is also his only form of crowd control. This ability can be a bit difficult to land at first but it has enough leeway for it to be forgiving on new players. A lot of Gord’s combos rely on landing Mystic Projectile so it would be worth your time to try and practice landing this ability in creative angles in the Training Area.
Second Skill – Mystic Injunction

Gord summons an energy field, dealing 80 / 95 / 110 / 125 / 140 / 155 (+20% Total Magic Power) Magic Damage every 0.45 second to enemy units.
Nothing too special about Gord’s second skill. It’s just a straight up damaging ability. When combined with the effects of Magic Items that deal a damage over time burn or a persistent slow, Mystic Injunction can be a very vexing ability to play against.
Ultimate – Mystic Gush

Gord unleashes an energy beam in a designated direction that lasts for 3s, dealing 220 (+50% Total Magic Power) (Magic Damage) every 0.3s to enemies hit and slowing them by 20%. The direction of the beam can be changed using the Left Joystick.
Gord’s ultimate is what he is best known for. It’s a long range beam of energy that deals damage to whoever it hits. It’s a great ability to use during team fights or for finishing off low health targets that attempt to flee. There’s a lot of ways you can use this ability and it is up to you to find all the ways to make it work.
Builds

Like most mages, Gord’s primary focus is to just stack the Magic Items to increase his damage output. Items that deal additional effects to his abilities would also work well with his kit. Since Gord is vulnerable due to his immobility, buying items that increase his survivability can go a long way in making him a more effective damage dealer. Out of all of these builds, there are 3 items we would consider core on Gord and must be present in nearly all of his builds. These are Glowing Wand, Ice Queen Wand, and Demon Shoes.
- Glowing Wand
+400 HP
+75 Magic Power
+5% Movement SPD
Unique Passive – Scorch: Skill Damage will burn the targets for 3s, dealing 1% of the target’s Max HP as Magic Damage per second (damaging the same target multiple times within a short duration can increase this damage to 2% at most), 10 damage minimum
- Ice Queen Wand
+75 Magic Power
+10% Magic Lifesteal
+150 Mana
+7% Movement SPD
Unique Passive – Ice Bound: Skills that deal damage to an enemy hero will slow them by 15%. This effect lasts 3 seconds. Stacks up to 2 times.
- Demon Shoes
+6 Mana Regen
+40 Movement SPD
Unique Passive – Mysticism: Eliminations of enemy heroes and assists regenerates hero’s mana by 10%, while eliminating minions regenerates 4% of the hero’s mana.
These core items synergize well with Gord’s abilities and allows him to be a better carry. Ice Queen Wand increases his Magic Damage, gives his abilities a slow, and a bit of Magic Lifesteal. Glowing Wand will scorch enemy heroes and deal a persistent burn that can shave off some of their health. Since Gord is reliant on his abilities to deal damage, he will be using up a lot of his mana. Demon Shoes is perfect in this regard and can solve Gord’s mana issues early on.
Useful Tips
- The best emblems to use on Gord are the Mage set. For the talent, take Magic Worship. Thanks to this talent, whenever you deal damage greater than 7% of target’s Max HP for 3 times in 5 seconds, you’ll inflict a burn on them 3 times for 82-250 Magic Damage.
- For battle spells, always take Flicker. Since Gord has no true escape tool, Flicker goes a long way in keeping him alive in close call situations. If the enemy team has a lot of hard crowd control, then you can take Purify since it removes all debuffs when used by a hero.
- Gord has a lot of counters. If a hero can deal a lot of damage and get close to Gord, chances are, this hero can counter him. Most assassins, Fighters, and Tanks can counter Gord so you must learn how to position carefully. Saber, Alucard, Chou, and Johnson are some of the heroes you need to watch out for when playing as Gord.
