How To Play Fiddlesticks In League Of Legends
Last Updated: April 9, 2022
Riot has done a great job reworking some of the old champions to make them better acclimated to the new meta. One of their best examples is Fiddlesticks. Ever since its rework, Fiddlesticks has been a strong pick in the Jungle. In this guide, we’ll show you everything you need to know to get you started playing the Ancient Fear.
Fiddlesticks is one of League of Legends’ classic Jungler champions. Its strong sustain combined with its impressive initiation capabilities make it tailor fit for the role. While it may shine best in team fights, Fiddlesticks is also a capable duelist. It is strong in situations where it has the fog of war advantage as it can catch enemy champions off guard. Its sustain is unbelievably great and it can solo Dragon as early as level 4. So, if you want a strong Jungler that can sustain on its own with excellent dueling and ganking abilities, this champion just might be perfect for you.
Fiddlesticks’ kit revolves around dealing damage, crowd control, and having a strong presence in a team fight.
Passive – A Harmless Scarecrow
Fiddlesticks has a Scarecrow Effigy in place of its trinket. After standing for 2 seconds, he poses as an Effigy. Effigies gain power as Fiddlesticks levels, reducing their cooldown and increasing their duration.
Level 6: Effigies will reveal any nearby wards for 6 seconds on placement.
This is a very useful passive to have. A Harmless Scarecrow lets you place effigies in place of trinkets. It will still function the same way a normal trinket does but with bonus effects. If an enemy were to walk into a ward with an effigy, they would be feared and you can use this opportunity to strike back.
Q – Terrify
Passive: If Fiddlesticks’ spells damage an enemy while unseen and outside of combat, they terrify the enemy for a few seconds. Fiddlesticks’ abilities terrify enemies when posing as an Effigy.
Active: Fiddlesticks terrifies the enemy for a few seconds and deals magic damage.
If the enemy has recently been terrified, it deals double damage.
Terrify was once a one note ability but ever since the rework, it had an added layer of much needed depth in the form of its passive. Instead of only terrifying enemies on one ability, you can now terrify enemies with all your abilities as long as you were unseen when you used it.
W – Bountiful Harvest
Fiddlesticks drains the souls of all enemies around itself, dealing magic damage every 0.25 seconds over 2 seconds, with the final tick dealing up to a percentage of their missing health as magic damage. Deals half damage to minions.
Fiddlesticks heals for a percentage of the damage dealt before mitigation, reduced to 15% versus minions.
On a completed channel or if nothing remains to be harvested, refund 60% of the remaining cooldown.
This is the biggest reason why Fiddlesticks is so successful as a Jungler. This is the source of his sustain. Bountiful Harvest drains life from enemies and heals Fiddlesticks for a certain amount.
E – Reap
Fiddlesticks unleashes dark magic from its scythe, dealing magic damage to and slowing enemies hit for 1.25s in a crescent-shaped area at a target position. Enemies in the center of the crescent are silenced for the duration.
Reap is your primary damaging spell. After your ultimate, this is the ability you’ll often lead with when ganking lanes. It has good damage and a wide area of effect. Use this ability to damage enemies as much as you can.
R – Crowstorm
Fiddlesticks channels for 1.5 seconds, then blinks to the target point unleashing a murder of crows that flock wildly around it, dealing magic damage per 0.25 seconds to all enemy units in the area for 5 seconds.
This is Fiddlesticks’ signature ability and what it is best known for. Crowstorm is such a massive game changer that when used right, can nearly eliminate the entire enemy team. It’s that powerful.
Runes and Item Builds
When it comes to item builds, your sole focus on Fiddlesticks is to increase its damage and survivability.
Since Fiddlesticks is a Jungler, your best starting item is Hailblade. Hailblade turns your Smite into Chilling Smite which you can use to slow enemy targets. Take a Refillable Potion as well for additional sustain early on.
The best choice for your Mythic item on Fiddlesticks is Hextech Rocketbelt. This gives you health, ability power, and an active dash that essentially functions as a gap closer or an escape tool. The next best choice is Riftmaker. With this item, you get some pretty insane sustain that allows you to keep going in the Jungle or to become this unkillable dueling champion. Last, but not the least, is Crown of the Shattered Queen. This gives you ability power, health, mana, and ability haste as well as the Safeguard passive which increases your survivability whenever you receive incoming damage from enemy champions. It’s pretty handy when you initiate a fight using Fiddlesticks’ ultimate.
After purchasing your desired Mythic, go for tier 2 boots. Since you’re playing a mage, better go with Sorcerer’s Shoes. Up next is Zhonya’s Hourglass. This item gives you the survivability you need so that you’re free to go in team fights using your ultimate without worrying about dying. Next, go for Shadowflame. This is a relatively new item that increases your overall damage. Finish off your build with a Void Staff and a Rabadon’s Deathcap to increase your magic penetration and your ability power.
Other Viable Items
While the full build we’ve shown above is generally considered the standard for Trundle, it is not set in stone. There are plenty of other items that you can purchase depending on your preference or what your situation currently needs. Items like Demonic Embrace, Rylai’s Crystal Scepter, Banshee’s Veil, and Cosmic Drive are all good items to have especially if you’re leaning towards dealing more damage. Try to mix and match these item sets to see what works best for you. Doing so will help you develop a better understanding of the game’s deeper mechanics.
For your runes, go with the Domination tree and take Electrocute as your keystone. This increases your overall burst right after 3 separate attacks or abilities within 3 seconds. Next, take Cheap Shot for bonus damage to targets with impaired movements or actions, Eyeball Collection for more damage, and Ultimate Hunter to reduce the cooldown on your ultimate. For secondaries, take Perfect Timing and Cosmic Insight from the Inspiration tree. Perfect Timing gives you a free stopwatch which you can later use to build Zhonya’s Hourglass and Cosmic Insight basically improves your cooldowns. For rune shards, take double Adaptive Force and Armor.
- Try to get into the mind of your opponents to plan your attacks. Since Terrify’s passive lets you instill fear on opponents that you attack from an unseen location, use this to your advantage when going in using Crowstorm.
- Fiddlesticks is weak against Champions with a faster clear than him. Champions like Udyr, Diana, Graves, Hecarim, and Shyvana are strong counters against Fiddlesticks. You should try to ban them when you can.
- For your summoner spells, always take Flash and Smite. Smite lets you clear Jungle camps faster while also letting you secure buffs like Baron or Dragon.
