How To Play Ekko In League Of Legends
Last Updated: March 22, 2022
Ekko has always been a popular champion ever since he was released. His fun and versatile play style combined with his penchant for dealing burst damage make him a favorite among casual and professional players. In this guide, we’ll show you everything you need to know to get you started playing the Boy Who Shattered Time.
Arcane, the Netflix original about the sprawling world of League of Legends, was a massive hit. So it makes sense that the champions featured there are enjoying a resurgence in the spotlight. Ekko is one of these champions but you can argue that he was already popular even before he was featured in Arcane. His popularity stems from his ability to completely take over games. Ekko has a ton of mobility which makes him very slippery and allows him to easily dip in and out of fights just to one shot the enemy team’s carry. He’s a very powerful assassin and when ahead, can be a champion with little to no counterplay. Although his skill level is rather steep, it’s worth investing time into just to master a champion like Ekko.
Ekko’s abilities are all about mobility and burst damage. His whole kit is about diving the team’s backline, eliminating their carries, and coming out of it unscathed.
Passive – Z-Drive Resonance
Every third attack or damaging spell on the same target deals bonus magic damage (Cannot be triggered on the same target more than once every 5 seconds), tripled against monsters. If the target is a champion, Ekko gains Movement Speed.
A lot of newer players tend to underestimate or even ignore this passive ability. While we can’t blame you for doing so, this ability is actually the biggest source of Ekko’s DPS. The bonus damage you deal is very strong and can make your target even more vulnerable to the rest of your damage. The best part is that your damaging spells work with this passive. So you can easily poke enemies with your Q while also proccing Z-Drive Resonance.
Q – Timewinder
Ekko throws a device that deals magic damage to enemies it passes through. It expands into a slowing field on the first champion hit, slowing everything inside. It then returns to him after a delay, dealing magic damage to all targets hit upon return.
Timewinder is your bread and butter. This ability is Ekko’s primary source of damage so you should often lead with this ability when trading against an opponent. It also deals more damage upon return so try to land this ability in creative angles. It has pretty decent range too so try to poke your opponent when they hide behind minions.
W – Parallel Convergence
Passive: Ekko’s basic attacks deal bonus magic damage to enemies under 30% health equal to [3% (+3% per 100) of target’s missing].
Active: After 3 second delay, Ekko creates a short-lived chronosphere at the target location that slows enemies who enter by 40%.
If Ekko enters the sphere, he will detonate it, gaining a shield for 2 seconds. Enemies caught inside are stunned for 2.25 seconds.
Parallel Convergence is one of the hardest abilities to master in League of Legends. That’s because it is so difficult to land and so easy to dodge. The passive part of this ability is pretty basic; your basic attacks lets you deal more damage to enemies with low health. The active part, however, is an entirely different thing. Mastering this is crucial and what will separate good Ekko players from bad ones.
E – Phase Dive
Ekko dashes a short distance in the targeted direction. His next basic attack will deal bonus magic damage and teleport him to his target.
Phase Dive is a very excellent mobility tool. It works both as an escape or a gap closer. You can use this to dodge skillshots, crowd control, and you can even use this to go through thin walls or terrain. Once you’ve used the dash, you also get a short window of time where you can teleport to an enemy target with your next basic attack. This is a big reason why Ekko can easily dive the enemy team’s backline and eliminate their carry.
R – Chrono Break
Ekko turns back time, going briefly untargetable and invulnerable. He teleports to where he was 4 seconds ago and deals magic damage to nearby enemies on arrival. Additionally, Ekko heals, increased by 3% for each 1% of his health lost over the last 4 seconds.
This is Ekko’s signature ability. Chrono Break is what lets Ekko run loose and wreak havoc without having to worry about his safety. It’s essentially a free save point in the game where you can go back to a healthy state when you make a mistake. Not only that, you will also deal a ton of damage once you teleport to your previous location. This is a very powerful ability that needs a bit of time to master. Once you do, you will be unstoppable.
Runes and Item Builds
When it comes to items, all you need to keep in mind when playing as Ekko is to make sure that you get your burst damage up. A bit of survivability would also go a long way so that you can take a few hits whenever you dive the enemies.
Ekko can be played in multiple roles. As such, your starting item depends on what role you’ll be playing. If you’re going to play in the Mid Lane, always start with a Doran’s Ring and a couple of Health Potions. This gives you everything you need to survive the laning phase. If you’re playing as a Jungler, go with either Hailblade or Emberknife. Hailblade turns your smite into Chilling Smite while Emberknife turns your smite into Challenging Smite. What you choose should depend on your preference. If you were to ask us, we would give the slight edge to Hailblade for the slow.
Ekko has plenty of options when it comes to his Mythic items. The most popular choice is Hextech Rocketbelt. This item makes him extra mobile, giving him another dash which he can use to close down on his targets. If you want to play extra aggressive, Crown of the Shattered Queen is a great option that allows Ekko to dive in safely without having to worry about the repercussions. Night Harvester works similarly but gives him movement speed and bonus damage instead of a safety net. Luden’s Tempest is another good choice but this only increases Ekko’s overall burst, nothing more. What you choose should depend on your preferred play style.
After purchasing your Mythic, you must go and upgrade your boots. Since Ekko is a mage, the best boots are Sorcerer’s Shoes since they give him additional Magic Penetration. Next, go for Lich Bane which enhances your basic attack right after using an ability. Then, go for Zhonya’s Hourglass for the bonus survivability and additional ability power. Round out your build with a Void Staff and Rabadon’s Deathcap to increase your overall damage output.
Other Viable Items
Most items that give ability power are actually pretty good on Ekko. Nashor’s Tooth, for example, gives him additional attack speed and bonus effects on his basic attacks which synergize well with his W and his passive. Demonic Embrace is another great item if you’re against a lot of tanks. Cosmic Drive can be paired perfectly with items that give him attack speed. And Banshee’s Veil gives him additional survivability thanks to its passive spell shield and bonus magic resist. We urge you to try out all of these items and see what works best for you.
For your runes, go with the Domination tree and take Electrocute as your keystone. This increases your overall burst and syncs perfectly with Z-Drive Resonance. Next, take Sudden Impact for the bonus damage whenever you dash, Eyeball Collection for more damage, and Ravenous Hunter for bonus Omnivamp. For your secondaries, take Manaflow Band and Scorch from the Sorcery tree. Manaflow Band gives you mana sustain early on while Scorch gives you persistent damage over time whenever you damage an enemy champion with an ability. For your rune shards, take Attack Speed, Adaptive Force, and Armor.
- Phase Dive is a great tool to set up all of Ekko’s other abilities. Particularly, Parallel Convergence. You can use this to quickly get in range to proc the stun whenever you use it on an enemy.
- Ekko is countered by champions that can prevent him from sticking to his target. Champions like Rammus, Elise, Amumu, Sejuani, and Zac are some of his biggest counters.
- For your summoner spells, always take Flash and Smite when playing in the Jungle. Flash gives you additional mobility, while Smite lets you clear jungle camps faster while also letting you secure objectives like Dragon or Baron. When playing in either the Top Lane or the Mid Lane, swap out Smite for Teleport or Ignite. Teleport lets you have a more global presence around the map while Ignite can help you secure leads faster in the early game.
