Overview

Cyclops is a very easy hero to play. It doesn’t take much skill to get good at playing him. All you need is basic understanding of the game’s fundamentals and knowing what each of Cyclops’ skills do. It’s because of this low skill cap that makes him a very underestimated hero. Under the hands of a skilled player, Cyclops can put his team on his back and hard carry games to victory. All of his abilities are spammable so you’ll be a reliable source of damage on your team. Most of his skills have fairly long range too so you’ll have no problem poking down enemy heroes that tend to hide behind their minions. An underrated aspect of Cyclops is the fact that he has pretty good attack speed. Despite being a mage, his attack speed is actually pretty great and can be the deciding factor in long extended fights. All of his abilities synergize perfectly with each other and make Cyclops a very well rounded mage. Although, being a mage, Cyclops is weak to speedy assassins that can burst him down in a single strike. He also lacks a true escape which can make him a sitting duck when caught in a sticky situation. Nevertheless, Cyclops is still a solid pick for the Mid Lane and we’ll recommend him to anyone looking to learn how to play mages in this role.

Abilities

All of Cyclops’ abilities focus on dealing magic damage. Spamming his abilities is key to being effective. He has a rather simplistic kit that is straightforward and easy to understand.

Passive – Starlit Hourglass

Each time Cyclops hits an enemy with his skill, all his skill cooldowns are reduced by 0.5s.

This is what makes Cyclops’ abilities very spammable. When combined with a build that focuses on CD reduction and Magic power, Cyclops can feel like a very overpowered hero that excels in long extended fights.

First Skill – Stardust Shock

Cyclops casts two shock waves of stardust forward, each dealing 275(+60% Total Magic Power) (Magic Damage) to the enemy.

This is Cyclops main offensive ability. It has a fairly long range and can go through minions. It’s an excellent source of poke damage while also clearing out minion waves.

Second Skill – Planets Attack

Cyclops uses the power of stars to generate a starlit sphere spinning around him and increases 30% of his own Movement Speed within 2s. The sphere will attack nearby enemy heroes first, dealing 200( +50% Total Magic Power) (Magic Damage) to them. (Damage dealt to the same target will decay.)

Planets Attack is Cyclops’ main trading spell. It will prioritize targeting enemy heroes and is perfect for dealing damage. Apart from his ultimate, this is probably Cyclops’ strongest ability. It’s also great for kiting enemies who get too close or chasing targets that try to flee from your attacks.

Ultimate – Star Power Lockdown

Cyclops creates a gigantic magic sphere filled with planetary power and sends it after an enemy hero or creep, dealing 500( +220% Total Magic Power) (Magic Damage) on hit and immobilizing them for 1-2s (scales with flying distance).

Cyclops’ ultimate is his only form of crowd control. It is a great ability that can stop heroes in their tracks. You can also use it to set picks for high priority targets or to just finish off heroes that try to get away. Since it scales with flying distance, it is perfect to catch fleeing heroes and lock them in place.

Builds

Since Cyclops is a mage, your only focus is to build as much Magic Damage as possible. Most magic enhancing items are viable on Cyclops but it is better to stick with items that can make you stronger in long extended fights. There are two core items that we want to highlight when using Cyclops. These are Enchanted Talisman and Divine Glaive

  • Enchanted Talisman

+250 HP

+50 Magic Power

+20% CD Reduction

Unique Passive – Mana Spring: Regenerates 15% of Max Mana every 10s in total.

Unique Passive – Magic Mastery: Max CD Reduction increased by 5%.

  • Divine Glaive

+65 Magic Power

Unique Passive: +35% Magic PEN

Unique Passive – Spellbreaker: Each point of the enemy’s Magic Defense increases Magic Penetration by 0.1% when dealing damage to it, capped at 20%.

Both of these items increase Cyclops’ effectiveness and should be included into all builds you decide to run with. Generally, you would rush Enchanted Talisman in every game since it gives Cyclops everything he needs to succeed. Later in the game, you should always buy Diving Glaive to increase your damage against heroes who stack Magic Resist to offset the damage they receive from you.

Useful Tips

  1. For emblems, always take the Mage set and take Impure Rage as your talent. Impure Rage allows your skills to deal extra Magic Damage equal to 4% of the target’s current HP and restores 3% of your Mana.
  2. For battle spells, always take either Flicker or Purify depending on your matchup. Since Cyclops lacks a true escape tool, Flicker will act as a sort of safety net that can help you survive close call situations. Purify also works similarly in a way since it removes all negative debuffs inflicted on you by enemy heroes.
  3. Speedy assassins counter Cyclops very hard. Heroes like Harley, Karina, and Gusion are examples of counters that can easily render Cyclops useless.
