Last Updated: August 20, 2021
Do you want to take a break from receiving notifications on Slack? Or do you want to focus on taking a vacation without hearing anything from your work? Either way, we got you covered. In our guide below, we’ll show you how to pause your notifications through the “Do not Disturb” feature on Slack.
Tutorial
By default, you receive all notifications and mentions from channels and direct messages on Slack. In this way, you won’t miss out on the things other members are discussing in your workspace.
However, you always have the option to use “Do not Disturb” to pause notifications for some time. With the help of this feature, you can take breaks from work without worrying about mentions and discussions on the channel.
If you’re new to the Slack platform and can’t find the option to mute all your notifications, don’t worry, we’re here to help you. All you have to do is follow our quick guide below.
How to pause your Slack notifications
If you need some peace when you’re not at work, you can pause your notifications with the “Do not Disturb” feature on Slack. You have the option to choose a time frame on the menu, create a custom one, or set a schedule.
You can pause your notifications on Slack whether you’re using the app on your computer or phone. Follow our quick step-by-step tutorials below, and we’ll show you how to do it on both devices.
On your computer:
- Open the Slack desktop app or visit the web browser client and sign in to your account.
- Click your profile icon on the upper-right side of the screen.
- Hover your mouse to “Pause notifications” and choose the duration on the menu. Alternatively, you can choose Custom to select a specific date and time for your settings to end.
Aside from choosing the duration of your notification snooze or creating a custom one, you can opt to create a schedule instead. In this way, you can repeat the time when you want to pause your notifications every day, on weekdays, or on specific days you choose.
Please note that you can only schedule pausing your notifications on the Slack desktop app. There’s no option to do so on the mobile version.
On your Android device:
- Launch the Slack app from your home screen or app drawer, and make sure to sign in to your account.
- Tap “You” at the bottom right corner of the screen.
- Tap “Pause notifications.”
- Select a duration from the options available or choose to create a custom one.
- If you prefer to create a custom duration, tap “Save” on the upper-right corner to apply the changes.
Once you enable “Do no Disturb,” you’ll pause all notifications and mentions from Slack. When you turn off the feature, you can check the messages you received while you’re using the DND option.
Please note that other workspace members can see when you pause your notifications. They can also override the “Do not Disturb” feature and send you an urgent message once a day.
Take a break from Slack with the “Do not Disturb” option
With the help of the DND feature on Slack, you can mute notifications from the app for a set amount of time or until you enable it back on. If your workspace has a schedule for “Do not Disturb,” creating a custom one overrides the default schedule.
Always remember that appearing offline on Slack doesn’t pause your notifications on the app. So if you want to dissuade other members from bothering you on the app, use the DND feature.
