How To Mute A Channel On Slack

Do countless alerts from Slack distract you from focusing on your work? Do you want to mute specific channels instead of pausing all your notifications on the app? If that’s the case, you’ll find our quick guide below helpful. We’ll show you how to mute one of your channels on Slack whether you’re using their mobile, desktop, or web app.

In Slack, people usually communicate on different channels in their workspace. Each channel can have a lot of members where they can share their thoughts and discuss collaborate without leaving anyone behind.

By default, you receive notifications from all the messages and mentions you receive on your Slack channels. As such, you might get a ton of alerts on your device, which can disturb you during your break or while you’re working.

Thankfully, Slack allows its users to manage notifications they receive on their workspace. With that in mind, here’s our quick guide on how to mute your channels on Slack.

How to mute one of your channels on Slack

Aside from pausing all your notifications on Slack, you have the option to mute specific channels on your workspace. This option gives you greater control over the alerts and notifications you receive, allowing you to focus on your priorities and projects.

You can mute channels whether you’re using Slack on your computer or phone. In our step-by-step tutorials below, we’ll show you how to do it on both devices.

On your computer:

  1. Launch the Slack app on your desktop or visit their web browser client and sign in to your account.
  2. Open one of your channels that you want to mute.
  3. Click the channel’s name on the conversation header. Alternatively, you can right-click on the channel’s name at the left side of your screen and select “Open channel details” on the menu.

  4. Click the notification options and select “Mute channel” on the menu.

Muting the channel moves it to the bottom of the list, and you’ll see a badge whenever someone mentions you in their messages. With that in mind, you can opt to turn off all notifications or receive mentions only.

Always remember that other members can’t see the channels you muted on your workspace. As such, you can handle your notifications any way you want.

On your Android device:

  1. Launch the Slack mobile app from your home screen or app drawer and sign in to your workspace.
  2. Open the channel you want to mute.

  3. Tap on the information icon on the top-right corner of the conversation.

  4. Toggle the Mute channel option.

Muted channels appear grayed out, and Slack moves them at the bottom of your chats list. While you won’t receive notifications from messages, you’ll see a numbered badge next to the conversations when someone mentions you on the channel.

Aside from channels, you can opt to mute DMs on Slack as well. You can do this by opening the conversation, clicking the member’s name on the header, and selecting the Mute option on the conversation details.

Be in control of your notifications on Slack

By having the option to mute specific channels and direct messages on Slack, you can disable notifications from conversations that aren’t on your priority. In this way, you can focus on your work and the stuff you need to finish with lesser distractions.

If you don’t want to receive alerts from all your conversations on Slack, you can opt to pause all your notifications on the app instead. When you do, you won’t receive all kinds of notifications, including mentions, from the channels on your workspace.
