How To Marry Shane In Stardew Valley
Last Updated: October 4, 2021
Marrying someone is one of the best features in Stardew Valley. Luckily, there’s no shortage of eligible bachelors you can choose from. Despite having a reputation for being difficult to get along with, Shane is actually one of the easiest marriage candidates to woo. In this guide, we’ll show you everything you need to know to marry Shane.

Who is Shane?

Shane is a villager from Pelican Town who’ll initially come off as rude and unhappy. Most of your interactions early on will be kinda cold and bitter. He suffers from depression and as a result he is alcohol dependent. He works at JojaMart and rents a room from Marnie at her ranch.
Shane is a classic example of never judging a book by its cover. Don’t be put off by his hard exterior, deep inside he’s a pretty fun guy who just wants someone to understand him. His attitude will slowly begin to change and he’ll eventually warm up to you once you befriend him.
Schedule

Shane has a pretty straightforward schedule. There’s nothing too special about it. He goes to work at JojaMart and then spends time drinking at the Stardrop Saloon after work. On weekends, he’ll mostly be around Marnie’s Ranch. Once you completely restore the Community Center, Shane’s schedule will start to change. Since he works at JojaMart, as soon as it closes down, he’ll be out of a job.
His schedule is more or less the same in all seasons, even when it is raining. It only changes once the Community Center is restored.
Before Community Center is Restored
Monday to Friday
- 7:10 AM: Leaves Marnie’s Ranch and heads to JojaMart
- 5:00 PM: Leaves JojaMart and heads to the Stardrop Saloon

When it rains on a weekend, Shane will follow his weekday schedule. Like everyone else, he goes to the Night Market on Winter 15 at 3:00 PM and stays there until 11 PM.
After Community Center is Restored
Monday to Friday
- 9:00 AM: Marnie’s kitchen
- 11:00 AM: Returns to his room
- 12:00 PM: Stands by the fireplace
- 2:00 PM: Heads to the Stardrop Saloon

Sunday

As you can see, there’s not much change in Shane’s schedule. He does spend a concerning amount of time at the Saloon.
Gifts

Everyone in Stardew Valley loves to receive gifts. However, you can’t just start giving out any item you find lying around and call it a day. No, you have to know which items each villager would love to receive. Give them a gift they like, and it’ll reduce your friendship points with them. The same goes for Shane. Luckily, most of what he loves and likes are pretty easy to get.

- Universal Loves (Prismatic Shard, Golden Pumpkin, etc.)

The easiest way to win Shane over is by giving him some Beer and Pizza. Both can be bought from the Stardrop Saloon for 400g and 600g, respectively. You can also make Beer by placing Wheat inside a Keg for 1 to 2 days. If that’s a little hard for you, don’t worry. You can just give Shane some of the Eggs from your chickens.
Heart Events

Heart Events are little cutscenes that occur when you reach a certain milestone or level of friendship with a marriage candidate. Some of them have choices that can increase or decrease your friendship points so be careful with what you choose. Let’s take a closer look at the Heart Events for Shane.
Two Hearts
Enter Cindersap Forest between 8:00 PM and midnight. Shane will share a beer with you and he opens up about his depression. He tells you how optimistic he is about your future and warns you against drinking heavily.
Three Hearts
Shane will send you a recipe for Pepper Poppers in the mail. He’ll also be less rude to you during your interactions.
Four Hearts
Enter Marnie’s Ranch at any time. Shane is found passed out in his room, surrounded by empty beer cans. Marnie asks you to do something, so you use your watering can on his head to wake him up. Marnie remarks that all he does is mope around and drink beer. When Marnie asks him what his plans for the future are, Shane says that he hopes he “won’t be around long enough to need a plan.” Jas overhears and runs away crying; Marnie follows her while Shane falls to the ground and cries while apologizing.
Six Hearts
Enter Cindersap Forest between 9:00 AM and 8:00 PM while storming or raining. Shane is laying face down at the edge of the cliffs, again surrounded by beer. He tells you that he’s miserable and asks you why he shouldn’t just roll off the cliff. You can respond in four different ways:
- “Because there’s so much to live for!” (No effect on friendship)
- “Jas needs you. You’re like a father to her.” (No effect on friendship)
- “It would be a sin.” (No effect on friendship)
- “The decision is your own. Just know that I’m here for you.” (No effect on friendship)
After that, you’ll take Shane to the Clinic where Harvey will suggest that he go see a counselor in Zuzu City. The next day, Shane will visit you to apologize for the incident and to tell you his intentions to go to counseling
- “I’m glad I was there to help.” (+10 friendship points)
- “You needed a serious wake-up call.” (-10 friendship points)
- “I’m just happy you’re still here.” (+10 friendship points)
Seven Hearts I
Enter Marnie’s Ranch while Shane is home after triggering the Six Hearts event. You’ll find Shane telling Marnie how much happier he is with himself. He gives Jas a present using the money he saved from not drinking beer.
Seven Hearts II
This Heart Event will only trigger if you have reached 2 Hearts with both Emily and Clint. After doing so, enter the town between 10:00 AM and 4:00 PM on a sunny day. You will find Shane filming a scene starring Emily and Clint. Shane will explain to you that Joja is holding a contest to create an advertisement for the newest Joja Cola, and the winner gets 10,000g. He will ask you to walk behind Clint and Emily as they act so the scene feels more natural. When it’s over, he will thank you for helping him.
Seven Hearts III
Shane will send you a recipe for a Strange Bun in the mail.
Eight Hearts

Enter Marnie’s Ranch while Shane is at home. When you enter the ranch, you’ll find Shane with his blue chickens and his favorite white chicken. He’ll introduce them to you and he’ll talk about passing his knowledge about chickens to Jas. After seeing this event, each chicken that the player purchases from Marnie and each egg that hatches in the incubator now has a 1/4 chance of being blue. Aside from appearance, the blue chickens are identical to white chickens.
Ten Hearts
Exit your house before 6:30 AM to initiate the event, then walk to the Bus Stop between 4:00 PM and 6:00 PM. Shane invites you to go see the Zuzu City Tunnelers (a gridball team) play in their stadium in Zuzu City. You take a bus into the city together and the scene changes to a grimy stadium with you and Shane in the stands. While cheering on the Tunnelers, Shane thanks you for sticking with him through his struggle with depression and anxiety. He then asks you what you think of your first gridball game:
- “Noisy… It makes me appreciate how peaceful it is back home.” (No effect on friendship.)
- “Fun… Pelican Town seems really boring in comparison.” (No effect on friendship.)
His attention returns to the game when the Tunnelers make a play and score a goal. In a moment of excitement, Shane gives you a kiss, but then he feels embarrassed by it and apologizes for getting carried away. After a pause, you reply with a kiss and allay his fears. The scene fades out and Shane briefly reflects on the evening.
Getting Married

We should note that you need to give your desired partner a Bouquet before you can reach Ten Hearts. This can be bought from Pierre’s General Store for 200g anytime you reach 8 hearts with a marriage candidate. As soon as you’ve maxed out the hearts, you can now purchase a Mermaid Pendant to officially ask your desired partner to marry you. This is available for purchase from the Old Mariner located at the beach beyond the bridge. He’ll only be there before 7:00 PM and will only appear during rainy days. You’ll also need to upgrade your Farmhouse at least once so that you can marry someone.
Once you and Shane are married, he’ll move into your farmhouse and set up a small chicken coop behind it where he’ll keep his favorite chicken, Charlie. Shane will sometimes give you useful items like a Beer, Large Egg, Pale Ale, Void Egg, or Pepper Poppers. You can choose to sell some of these items or use them for your own benefit.
Fun Facts
- Shane is actually a gamer. Inside his room, you’ll find a console called Mega Station and he uses it to play a game called Code Sultan XL
- When you’re married, Shane will confess that he wishes he was six inches taller. It’s worth noting that his sprite is shorter when compared to the other male sprites during the Flower Dance cutscene.
