Tutorial

Signal is one of the most secure messaging services out there. You can use it to communicate with your friends without worrying about the safety of your conversations.

If you have a lot of contacts on the app, you might be receiving a lot of messages from your group or private conversations each day. As such, there might be instances where you’re too busy to reply on each chat you check.

Thankfully, Signal allows you to mark your conversations as unread on your end of the app. This feature can help you remember conversations and chats where you forgot to reply.

Here’s our quick guide about marking a conversation as unread on the Signal Messaging app.

How to mark a conversation as unread on Signal

If you want to come back to a conversation and read the latest messages in the future, you can mark it as unread. In this way, you can easily see them on the chats list the next time you visit the Signal app.

You can mark a conversation as unread whether you’re using Signal on your desktop or mobile device. In our quick tutorials below, we’ll teach you the steps to do it from both.

On your Android device:

  1. Launch the Signal app from your home screen or app drawer and sign in to your account.
  2. Tap and hold on to one of the conversations on your account.

  3. Once the menu appears, tap the Unread option.

When you mark a conversation as unread, you’ll see a blue circle besides its name on your chats list. Once you open the conversation in the future, it won’t appear unread unless you mark it again.

You can select multiple conversations and mark them as read on the app. To do so, tap and hold on to one of the chats, hit the “Select” option from the menu, tap multiple conversations, and select the Unread option at the bottom of your screen.

On your computer:

  1. Open the Signal on your desktop and link your account to the app.
  2. Open the group or private that you want to mark as unread.
  3. Click the drop-down arrow on the upper right corner of the conversation.

  4. On the menu that appears, select the “Mark as unread” option.

Unfortunately, you can’t select multiple conversations on the Signal desktop app. You’ll need to open each one and mark them as unread manually.

Please note that marking a conversation as unread on the desktop app won’t carry over to the mobile one.

To wrap it all up

Now that you know how to mark conversations as unread on Signal, you can use this feature to remind you about important chats where you need to respond. Always remember that it will only appear as unread on your end of the conversation.
