By default, your account on Instagram is to public. As such, anyone on the app can find your profile, view your posts, and check your public stories whenever they want.
However, the app gives users the option to choose which people can access your profile. You can prevent non-followers from checking your posts or anything within your profile on Instagram.
By making your account private on the app, you can filter which people can follow you on the app. You’ll need to approve someone’s request before they can be a follower of your account.
How to make your account on Instagram private
If you want to control which people can follow you on Instagram, you can change your account to a private one. With the help of this feature, you can approve, ignore, or reject people who request to follow you on the app.
You can make your account private on Instagram whether you’re using the mobile or web app. Follow our tutorial below, and we’ll show you how to do it from both.
On your mobile device:
- Open Instagram from your home screen or app drawer and sign in to your account.
- Tap your icon on the bottom right to open your profile page, and tap the hamburger icon on the top right corner of your screen.
- Once the menu appears, select “Settings.”
- Head to your Privacy options.
- Toggle the “Private account” option and confirm your decision.
That’s how you make your account private on the Instagram mobile app. When you enable this option, only your followers can view your stories or see the contents of your profile.
On the Instagram web app:
- Click your profile icon on the top right corner of the app and select “Settings” from the menu.
- Head to your Privacy and Security settings.
- Put a check on the Private account option and confirm your decision.
Changing your account from a public to a private one doesn’t affect your existing followers. However, you can remove followers that you don’t want to view your profile or stories whenever you want.
