The Secret Base feature is one of the most beloved things about Pokémon games. After being out for a while, it makes a return in Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl. Although this time, it’s a little different. Here’s how you can make your own Secret Base.

What is a Secret Base?

First introduced in Generation III at the Hoenn region, a Secret Base is a special area that the player can create and decorate with various furniture, accessories, and Pokémon Dolls. Think of it as a sort of virtual treehouse where you’re free to put anything that you like, I mean within the confines of the games of course. Secret Bases used to be available on certain trees, bushes, and dents in the wall where you could use TM43, Secret Power. However, in the Sinnoh region, Secret Bases can only be made in the Grand Underground and you can create one using a Digger Drill. 

In the Gen IV remakes, Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, the Secret Base is a little different. For starters, you can only place statues that you get from the Grand Underground. However, depending on the statue you placed, certain types of Pokémon are more likely to appear in the caves and caverns in the Grand Underground. The best part is you can press the Y button to enter photo mode so you can capture snapshots of you with your Pokémon statues that you can share with your friends.

How do you make a Secret Base?

The first thing you need to do before making a Secret Base is to gain access to the Grand Underground. Don’t worry, you can do this within the first few hours of playing the game. To gain access to the Grand Underground, you’ll need the Explorer Kit which you can obtain in Eterna City. Right next to the Pokémon Center, is a house where the Underground Man lives. He’s a former digger who will give you the Explorer Kit you need to get to the Grand Underground. Next, he’ll give you a task of digging up one treasure from the bulging walls underground. Once you have a treasure, you can come back up and show it to Underground Man. He’ll then give you a Digger Drill which you’ll use to make your secret base in the Grand Underground. 

To use it, walk up to a wall and simply press the A button to be prompted if you want to make a Secret Base on the indicated area. If you click on Yes, you will consume one Digger Drill and you’ll finally have a Secret Base.
