How To Know If A Message Was Read In WhatsApp

Are you wondering when the person you’re chatting with on WhatsApp reads your message? If that’s the case, you can check for reading receipts and message details for the group and individual chats on the platform. To help you, here’s a quick guide on how to check if the status of messages you send on WhatsApp.

WhatsApp is one of the most popular messaging apps that offer their services for free. It allows its users to connect with other people online with the use of their phone number.

Aside from its primary chatting features, users can also check the status of each message they send by default. You can know whether a chat was read, delivered, or sent successfully.

So if you’re wondering whether someone is deliberately ignoring you or it’s just that they don’t receive your messages, you can check the read receipts and the details of every chat you send.

Although people familiar with messaging apps can find these features without a problem, that’s not the case for everyone. So if you’re having trouble finding them, we have here a quick guide on how to check your read receipts and message information on WhatsApp.

Check your read receipts

Every message you send on WhatsApp has checkmarks that appear beside them. These symbols indicate the status of your message, whether it’s delivered, read, or sent successfully.

A gray checkmark means that you sen the message without a problem. Meanwhile, two gray checks indicate that the platform delivered the message to the recipient’s device.

Note: Read receipts are also available on the WhatsApp web app.

If those check marks turn blue, it means that the person has read your message. But if you can’t see any indicator or whatsoever beside each message you send, the person might have their read receipts settings turned off.

If you’re on a group chat, the second checkmark only appears when every participant receives your message. In addition, the indicator only turns blue once everyone reads your message.

View message info

Aside from checking the read receipts, you can also view the information screen of each message you send. It shows the details and time when the message was delivered, read, or played (if it’s a voice message) by the recipient.

To access the information screen:

  1. On the Chats tab, open one of your group or individual chats.

  2. Tap and hold a message to access some of its quick options.
  3. Tap the information icon. On some phones, you might have to select More options (three dots) > Info.

The information screen shows the time in which the message got delivered or read. If you’re in a group chat, it shows the details of each individual that has read your message.

To access this feature on WhatsApp web, hover on a chat message, click the drop-down icon, and select Message Info from the options.

How to disable your read receipts

If you don’t want to show people from your individual chats whether you read a message or not, you can turn off the receipts from your privacy settings. Just remember that turning this feature off doesn’t affect receipts from group chats or voice messages.

Here’s how to turn off read receipts on WhatsApp:

  1. At the top right corner of your screen, tap More options (three-dot icon) > Settings.

  2. Select Account to access the privacy, security, and other account settings.

  3. Tap Privacy.

  4. Toggle your read receipts off.

Once you disable this feature, you won’t receive or send any read receipts in the future. However, this doesn’t affect the group chats and voice messages on the platform.

By default, WhatsApp users can check the status of every message they send on the platform. Whether if it’s on an individual or group chat, people can read receipts and access message information.

With the help of these status indicators, you can now identify when the recipient receives the message and the moment they read them. But if you can’t see any status indicator, the person may have this feature disabled on their account.
