The Old Rod is, appropriately, one of the oldest items in the game. First introduced in Generation I, this fishing item makes a return in the Gen IV remakes, Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl. Here’s how and where you can get it.

Fishing has been a staple feature of most Pokémon games. It allowed trainers to catch Water type Pokémon before they’ve acquired the hidden move, Surf. And even if you could encounter wild Pokémon by surfing, there are still some Pokémon that can only be encountered by using any of the fishing rods you’ll find in the game. These fishing rods are key items that cannot be sold but can be acquired after meeting certain NPCs. The first fishing rod most players will encounter is the Old Rod. 

Where to Get the Old Rod

The Old Rod is a key item that will allow you to fish for wild Pokémon in lakes, ponds, or the ocean. It is the first of three fishing rods you can encounter in the game and has the lowest amount of Pokémon you can capture. To get it, first you must make your way to Jubilife City. Here, you can find all sorts of things that can help you on your journey. 

Make your way to the city’s western gate, the one that leads you to Route 218.

Inside the building, you’ll find a fisherman who will give you the Old Rod. 

He’ll even give you tips on how to use it if you need instructions.

What can you catch with the Old Rod?

There are only two Pokémon you can catch using the Old Rod: Magikarp and Feebas. You’ll find Magikarp on most bodies of water you’ll use the Old Rod on. Feebas, on the other hand, is a bit more complicated and would require you to have certain hidden moves to reach its location. By then, you’ll probably have access to the Good Rod so there’s no point in using the Old Rod. Both of these Pokémon start out weak but evolve into some really powerful Pokémon.

How do you use the Old Rod?

To use the Old Rod, simply open your bag and look for it under your Key Items. Select it, and you’ll be able to use it. You can register it as well so that you can easily access it. Next, just step next to a body of water and use the fishing rod to start fishing.

You’ll see an exclamation point appearing above you once you’ve hooked a Pokémon. 

Then you’ll be prompted to start a battle and from there, you can catch the Pokémon you’ve encountered.
