Gaming
Pokémon is a game that likes to keep things interesting. One of the ways it keeps things fresh is by incorporating different kinds of evolution mechanics. The most common method of evolving Pokémon (aside from leveling them up of course) is through trades. Magmortar is one of those Pokémon that only evolves when traded but with a slight twist.
Magmortar
Magmortar is a very powerful Pokémon with an absurdly high Special Attack stat. It’s one of those Pokémon that boasts a pretty slick design and can be used competitively as well. Fire types are always strong Pokémon but Magmortar is a different beast altogether. It truly puts the fire in firepower.

With a stat total of 540, it will surely make its presence known whether in casual or competitive battles. It has a pretty deep move pool too so it has amazing coverage that can check a wide variety of Pokémon in certain matches. If you’re looking for a Fire type Wallbreaker for your team then you can never go wrong with Magmortar.
That being said, we bet you’re eager to get your hands on such an incredible Pokémon. So how exactly do you get a Magmortar?
How to Get a Magmortar?
Let’s get one thing clear first, Magmortar is a Shining Pearl exclusive. So if you own Brilliant Diamond, the only way to obtain this Pokémon is through a trade. With that out of the way, let’s begin.

So the first thing you’ll need to get a Magmortar is a Magby. You see, there is now way you’ll encounter a Magmortar in the wild. You need to catch its base form and evolve it from there. You’ll also need a special hold item called Magmarizer. The only way to get this item is from a Magby itself so if you’re lucky, you’ll hit two birds with one stone.

Magby is a rare spawn that can be encountered in caves and caverns in the Grand Underground. Here are the places where you can find a Magby and the corresponding chances of encountering it:
- Volcanic Cave – 30%
- Sandsear Cave – 20%
- Typhlo Cavern – 20%
It is worth mentioning that not all Magby’s will be carrying a Magmarizer. In fact, there’s only a 5% chance that a Magby you encounter will be carrying one. It might take a while but a Pokémon like Magmortar is surely worth it.

After securing a Magby and a Magmarizer, the next thing to do is to evolve it into a Magmar. A Magby won’t just evolve into a Magmortar, you have to raise it until Lv. 30 first and evolve it into a Magmar.
Once you have a Magmar, you’re now ready to evolve it into a Magmortar. The next step requires you to have a trade partner. Whether it’s another Switch unit you own or a different person entirely, is up to you. Simply trade Magmar while holding a Magmarizer and it will instantly evolve into Magmortar.
Useful Tips
- Use Quick Balls and Dusk Balls when catching Pokémon in the Grand Underground to increase your catch rate.
- Finally caught a Magby but it doesn’t have a Magmarizer and you don’t want to keep catching until you get one? Just use TM44! TM44 contains the move Thief. Pokémon that use this move will be able to steal whatever hold item its target has.
