How To Get A Divorce In Stardew Valley
Last Updated: August 21, 2021
Are you tired of your marriage? Feel like the sparks just aren’t there anymore? If you’re looking to change things up and leave your significant other in Stardew Valley, we got you covered. In this guide we’ll show you how you can get a divorce and all the things that come with it.
Stardew Valley is a very intricate game. Aside from being able to enjoy the farm life, you can also get married to someone. But just like in real life, there’s a chance that your fairytale romance could turn sour. Like if they start saying weird…things.
In the event that this happens, you can get a divorce and leave your partner a broken 16-bit mess. If you think that’s cruel, you can even get rid of any children you’ve had with your ex. It sounds harsh, but it’s possible. So how do you divorce your partner?
Where Do You Get a Divorce?
It goes without saying, but you need to be officially married before you can get a divorce. Assuming you already have, the first thing you need to do is to go to the Mayor’s house. Mayor Lewis’ home is located right next to the graveyard. His home is open everyday, except on festival days, from 8:30 AM – 10:00 PM.
Go inside his house and you’ll see two books under a bulletin board near his kitchen and dining area. If you click these books, you’ll be prompted a question asking if you want to file for a divorce. Make sure that you’re intent on getting a divorce since these will cost you 50,000g.
Once you’ve agreed to file for divorce, you will receive a message that it won’t take effect until the next morning. It also tells you that should you change your mind, you can come back before the night ends. Remember that Mayor Lewis’ house is inaccessible from 10:00 PM onwards, so make sure to come back before then.
What Happens Next?
After you’ve divorced your partner, they will move back to their original home. Also, they will be incredibly hostile towards you. Like they will be really mean to you. You did break their heart so, you can’t expect them to feel good about it. All your interactions will be negative. Even if you try to give them things that they love. Your relationship will go back to zero hearts and they will be listed as your ex.
What About Our Children?
Unlike real life divorces, you won’t get into a heated court hearing about who gets custody of your kids. In Stardew Valley, you automatically keep your children. If you were expecting to get children when the divorce went through, they will no longer be delivered. Your children will stay on your farm unless, well, you decide to get rid of them.
Getting rid of your children is as dark and as creepy as it sounds. If you want to continue, first you need to have access to the Witch’s Hut. Inside, you’ll find three shrines. One of these shrines is called the Dark Shrine of Selfishness. For one Prismatic Shard, you can dismiss your children and have them turned into doves. Once you do this, they’ll leave your farm forever.
You can actually do this even when you’re married and have unwanted children. It’s still pretty creepy though.
Can I Remarry My Ex?
Let’s say you had a change of heart and you feel like getting back together with an ex. Can you remarry them? Yes you can. But it’s not as simple as just winning them back. After your divorce, your ex is gonna feel salty about the whole thing and will find you extremely unlikable. So what you need to do is to head back to the Witch’s Hut and this time make an offering at a different shrine. This shrine is called the Dark Shrine of Memory. For 30,000g, you can wipe the memory of your ex-spouses and it would be like the two of you never even met. You get a fresh start with them should you choose to have a relationship with them again. If only it was this easy in real life.
Rumor has it that the developer of the game, Eric ‘ConcernedApe’ Barone, only included this feature because he felt guilty of letting these poor characters experience the pain of divorce.
So there you have it! That’s all you need to know about getting divorced in Stardew Valley. We hope you found this guide helpful in any way. Have fun!
