Last Updated: November 23, 2021
Do you want to check the previously shared messages and files on archived channels on Slack? Are you having trouble locating them in your workspace? If that’s the case, follow our quick guide below. We’ll show you how to find all the archived channels on your Slack workspace.
Tutorial
In Slack, members can archive channels they no longer use to remove them from the sidebar. In this way, you can focus on active channels while hiding the discussions that your team no longer needs to use.
When you archive a channel, you get to preserve its message history on your workspace, including the files shared within the conversation. As such, you can visit the discussion in the future if you ever need some references or re-checking.
If you’re having trouble finding your archived channels on Slack, there’s no need to worry since we’re here to help. Here’s our guide about using the Channel browser to locate archived discussions on the app.
How to find archived channels on your workspace
If you want to check archived channels within your Slack workspace, you can use the Channel browser function on the app. Once you find the one you want to view, you can unarchive or delete them whenever you want.
You can use the Channel Browser to find archived channels on the Slack desktop and web app. In our step-by-step tutorial below, we’ll show you how to use this feature on your workspace.
- Open the Slack desktop or web app on your computer and sign in to your workspace.
- Click More (three dots icon) on the sidebar and select the Channel browser option on the menu.
- Search the name of the archived channel that you want to view. You can also use the filter option and select “Archived channel” as the parameter.
- On the search results that appear, select the one you want to view, delete, or unarchive.
Unless you delete an archived channel, it won’t disappear from your workspace on Slack. You can check its contents whenever you want or unarchive the channel if you need to.
Unfortunately, you can’t use the Channel browser on the Slack mobile app to find your archived channels. You need to open the desktop or web app to find and view them on your workspace.
To unarchive a channel, tap its name on the conversation header, head to the Settings tab, click the Unarchive option and confirm your decision. If you can’t see the unarchive option, ask an admin or the owner for help.
If you no longer need an archived channel, you can always delete it if you have permission to do so. However, doing so erases all messages and files within the conversation permanently.
To wrap it all up
Now that you know to find your archived channels on Slack, you can check the messages and files shared on the hidden conversation. Whether you want to delete, unarchive, or browse the discussion, it’s all up to you.
