How To Evolve Onix In Pokémon Brilliant Diamond/Shining Pearl

Onix is one of the most recognizable Rock Pokémon of all time. Ever since it was introduced in Generation I and its evolution in Generation II, Onix and Steelix are a staple of any player trying to complete their Pokédex. Here’s everything you need to know about evolving your Onix.

Gaming

Onix

Onix is a Rock/Ground type Pokémon that bears a resemblance to a giant snake. It’s one of the best Rock types you can encounter early on in Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl. It won’t wow you with it’s stats but it does have a pretty high Defense making it a very durable Pokémon that can fit the role of a tank on your team. It’s also pretty easy to acquire being available in the Oreburgh Mine, near the first gym. It’s also one of the first Pokémon you’re likely to encounter in the caves and caverns in the Grand Underground.

So Onix is a pretty solid Pokémon and can be fine on it’s own for a casual playthrough. But what if you want to play competitive battles? Of course, you’re gonna have to get it’s evolution with the superior typing, Steelix.

Steelix

As we all know, Fairy type Pokémon dominate the meta with an array of powerful moves and a type that has only two weaknesses. One of these weaknesses is Steel. This is where Steelix comes into play. Steelix is an incredible Steel/Ground type Pokémon with a base stat total of 510 and an insanely high Defense stat of 364 and it can be maxed out to a whopping total of 548! Needless to say, Steelix is a must have for trainers looking for a Physical Wall to round out their team.

Now that we’ve sold you on getting your own Steelix, you’re probably wondering what you need to do in order to get one. Here’s how you can evolve your Onix.

Metal Coat

Unlike regular Pokémon, your Onix won’t evolve naturally by leveling up. It needs to be traded. However, it also shakes things up by having a required item before it evolves when traded. This item is the Metal Coat. A Metal Coat is a held item that can boost Steel type moves. There are two ways to acquire a Metal Coat. The first way is to unlock the National Pokédex after beating the Pokémon League. You can only unlock the National dex as soon as you’ve seen or acquired every Pokémon in the Sinnoh region. Once you’ve done this, you can head on over to Iron Island where Byron, the Canalave City Gym Leader, will give you a Metal Coat. This method may take a bit of time considering you’ll have to find a way to get your hands on every Pokémon in the game which can be difficult since there are version exclusive Pokémon.

The easier way of getting a Metal Coat is to get it from certain Pokémon in the Grand Underground. Bronzor, Beldum, and Magnemite are Pokémon known to sometimes carry a Metal Coat. It’s not a guarantee that every Bronzor or Magnemite you find will have this item so you’ll need to either use the move Thief every time you encounter these Pokémon or you can simply catch them and take the item from them in the menu afterwards. This is the better way since Bronzors are a pretty common sight in the Grand Underground.

Trading

Now that you’ve gotten your hands on a Metal Coat, it’s time to evolve your Onix. Start by looking for a trade partner. It doesn’t matter if you have the same version of Pokémon game as long as you can trade with each other. Now, make your Onix hold the Metal Coat and have it traded. Once it arrives on the other end, it will immediately evolve into a Steelix regardless of its level. Now have it traded back to you and you will now own a Steelix!
