How To Disable Your Groupme Account

Nowadays, technology is so advanced that we can communicate instantly with almost anyone. We can send a message to some else’s smartphone from our personal computer or vice versa. This was unthinkable 20 years ago. But today, we can do this former impossible task under a couple of minutes. 

You will find many different apps for this job. Most of them work in the same way and are only different in the number of users that the app has. But there is a messaging app that somehow stands from the rest, which is GroupMe. It is a quite uncommon app, but this does not mean that it is useless. In fact, it has a major feature which neither WhatsApp or Telegram has, and is the ability to send messages to both smartphone users and non-smartphone users alike. 

Yes, you heard that right. GroupMe is great because you can send a message to multiple users all at once, regardless if some of them do not have a smartphone. The only requirement is that the sender has to have the app installed. 

Why you can do this? Well, GroupMe works as a normal SMS service. Therefore, you can send a message to anyone that has a cell phone number; great right? This is especially helpful under time-sensitive situations because the SMS services are delivered faster and do not need network data. For example, you need to make a presentation to your boss with other coworkers. Or you are planning a trip to the beach and some friends do not have a smartphone.

Nonetheless, the day may come when you no longer need GroupMe services. Therefore, you will need to know how to delete your account to unlink both your phone number and email address. Here is how you can do it:

Before beginning, you must transfer any group ownership to another user, or you won’t be able to delete your account. Alternatively, you can end the group and no one will be able to use it again. 

Step 1

If you are on your smartphone, open your app and click on the menu icon. It is on the top left corner of the screen. 

Step 2

Then, click on your avatar, it is the first option on the top. (If you are an iOS user click on the Profile option).

Once there, hover over the edit icon and click it.

Now, scroll down a bit until you see the Delete GroupMe Account option. It is the fourth option from the top down, and it is highlighted in red, so it is impossible to miss it.

You will be asked to confirm your selection. Click continue if you wish to proceed. 

If you have any second thoughts after deleting your account, you can reactivate it by using the email or SMS link that GroupMe sends to you. Alternatively, you can log back on to prevent the deactivation process. Take into consideration that you can do this within 48 hours after you choose to delete your account. Passed that time, you will not be able to get it back. Therefore, you must create a new account again.
