How To Create Sections On Slack

Do you want to organize your channels and conversations on Slack? Do you want to separate them into different sections on your sidebar? If you feel that it can improve your experience on the app, you can create new custom sections on your workspace. In our guide below, we’ll cover everything you need to know about doing so.

By default, there are three sections on your Slack sidebar. The app has sections for your channels, another for your DMs, and a separate one for your apps.

However, those on the Business+ or Enterprise Grid plans can organize and customize the sidebar on their workspace. If you’re a member of a workspace with one of these premium plans, you can create multiple sections to group channels together.

With that in mind, here’s our guide about creating new sections on your Slack sidebar.

How to organize your channels with sections on Slack

If you want to group your channels on Slack, you can create custom sections on your sidebar. In this way, you can organize channels into different groups, making it easier for you to find the one you need at the moment.

You can create sections on the Slack desktop or web app. Since these custom sections on your sidebar are only visible to the user, you can edit them anyway you want.

Note: Customizing the sidebar is only available to one of the premium plans on Slack.

1. On your computer, open the Slack app (desktop or web app) and sign in to your workspace.
2. Hover your mouse pointer to the Channels section on your sidebar and click the three dots icon.
   
   
3. On the menu that appears on your screen, select “Create new section.”
   
   
4. Add the name for the section and add a corresponding emoji (optional). You can also choose from one of the recommendations below the name field.
   
   
5. After adding the section information, click Create to confirm your decision.

You can drag and drop your channels and DMs to move them to another section. You can also hover on one of your sections and select the “Edit sidebar” option from the menu to move and manage multiple conversations in one go.

Unfortunately, you can’t create new custom sections on the Slack mobile app. However, you can still manage and move your conversations to different sections whenever you want.

To move a channel or DM on the mobile app, head to the conversation and tap the Details icon on the top right corner. Tap and hold on to the star icon and select a custom section from the list.

Keep in mind that changes to your sidebar are only visible to your end of the app. Other members can customize their sidebar and create new sections they want.
