How To Create A TikTok Duet

TikTok has made creating videos easy and publishing them effortless. One of the coolest features of the app is the ability to duet. While duets themselves are nothing new, the ability to duet with yourself or with a celebrity you have never met is. That’s why we have put together this tutorial on creating TikTok duets.

I’ll show you how to duet with yourself and with celebrities or other people even if you might be thousands of miles away from them.

If you’re of a certain age, i.e. under 21, you will already know all about TikTok. You will probably know more than me. If you’re older, trying to use TikTok for marketing or just want to see what your kids are up to, it’s a mind-boggling array of 15 second videos covering everything from makeup to lip sync videos and literally everything inbetween.

Creating TikTok duets

Duets are a function of the app that let you sing with someone else. You can create videos that allow others to duet with you and they can do the same. Many celebrities also create videos that let fans duet with them for an extra level of engagement. It’s a small feature of TikTok but a very popular one.

Create a duet or with a random or celebrity on TikTok

This type of duet takes a published video of a friend, random user or celebrity and creates a duet video with them on one side and you on the other. It’s actually cooler than it sounds and if you see any of the millions of duet videos on TikTok, you’ll see what I mean.

To duet in a published video, do this:

1. Open TikTok and find a video to duet along to.
   
2. Open the video and select Share.
   
3. Select Duet from the popup window. The screen should split in two.
   
4. Select the red/pink video button when the video appears to begin recording.
   
5. Select Next to add captions, titles, links, tags and anything else you want to add.
   
6. Select Post when you’re ready to publish.
   

When you hit record, your screen will split in two with the source video on one side and you on the other. Timing is everything with duets so pace yourself and try to keep in time as much as possible. Record your duet, add any effects you want to add and you’re ready to publish.

As far as I know, any video published on TikTok is fair game. You can choose any video you like to duet with with no repercussions. Even videos from celebrities are fair game as the minute they are released, they are going to be copied, used and duetted with. That’s part of using TikTok.

Duet with yourself on TikTok

While it may sound strange, you can duet with yourself on TikTok. Some people have done this with great effect either lip syncing to songs or creating sketches where they play off against themselves. The process is much the same ads above, except you use one of your own videos instead of one you find on the app.

1. Create or upload your first video in the TikTok app.
   
2. Select Share and then Duet to set up the video.
   
3. Select Record as the screen splits in two.
   
4. Record the second half of the video.
   
5. Hit Next to add captions, titles, tags and so on.
   
6. Select Post to make it live.
   

You will have to think creatively to make a duet with yourself work. There are lots of great examples on the app where people either sing, talk or work against themselves in a sketch. If you have some good ideas of how to use this feature, you could have a serious hit on your hands!

Duets are a minor feature of TikTok but a very popular one. As mentioned at the top, the ability to sing along with your favorite celebrity or artist is a compelling one. As is the ability to duet with yourself or come up with some other creative way to use duets in a video. There are also a ton of comedy sketches where people play off against themselves or use other tricks to make us laugh using the duet feature. The sheer amount of creativity on the app is one of the reasons it is so popular.
