Tutorial

In Slack, users can start DMs with up to nine people involved. You can use these group conversations to discuss topics outside of channels on your workspace.

However, there are times when you need to add more people to the group DM in the future. If that’s the case, you can convert the conversation to a private channel.

When you convert a group conversation to a channel, it’ll retain all the messages and files shared on the chat previously. All the new members that join the channel in the future can access and browse these contents whenever they want.

With that in mind, here’s our guide about converting DMs to a private channel on Slack.

How to convert a group DM to a private channel on Slack

If you want to include more people in your group DM on Slack, you can convert it to a private channel. All new members that join in the future can access the messages and files back then when the conversation is a direct message.

You can convert a group DM to a channel on the Slack desktop or web app. In our step-by-step tutorial below, we’ll show you how to do so.

  1. Launch the Slack desktop app or visit their web browser client and sign in to your workspace.
  2. Head to the group DM that you want to convert to a private channel.
  3. Click the members’ icons on the top right side of the conversation.

  4. Head to the Settings tab and select “Change to a private channel.”

  5. Type the new name for the channel and click “Change to Private” to confirm your decision.

Note: Converted DMs on an Enterprise Grid become multi-workspace channels automatically.

Once you convert a conversation to a channel, you can’t undo your decision. Also, new members of the converted channel can see all the messages and files previously shared within the conversation.

Take note that workspace owners and admins can restrict people that can create private channels on Slack. If you don’t see an option to convert a group conversation to a channel, ask one of them for help.

You can’t convert group conversations with people from other companies. You can only do it with members of your workspace and multi-channel guests.

Unfortunately, you can’t convert group DMs on the Slack mobile app. You’ll have to open the desktop or web client to do so.

To wrap it all up

Now that you know how to convert group conversations to private channels on Slack, you can include more people in your conversations while saving its message history. If you don’t need to show the messages and files shared previously to new members, you can create a new channel instead.
