Tutorial

In Signal, users can switch devices if whenever they want. However, using your phone number on a new device doesn’t recover your contacts, profile, settings, and blocked users from your old device.

Thankfully, Signal allows you to create a PIN on your account. With the help of this feature, you can recover your profile and other data whenever you register your number on a new device.

Aside from that, you can also use the PIN to prevent other people from registering to Signal with your phone number. Here’s our guide about creating or changing your PIN on Signal.

How to manage your Signal PIN

If you want to have a way to recover your data on Signal when you lose your phone or wish to switch devices, you can add a PIN to your account. This PIN is not the security code that you need to enter to unlock your account or a chat backup to recover your lost message history.

You can add a PIN to your account from the Signal mobile app. Follow our quick tutorial below, and we’ll guide you step-by-step on the things you need to know.

  1. Open the Signal app on your mobile device and sign in to your account.
  2. Tap the three dots icon on the top right corner of the chats list.

  3. Once the menu appears, tap Settings.

  4. On the Settings page, select “Account” below your name and number.

  5. Tap the “Change your PIN” option on your screen.

  6. Enter your PIN with at least four digits and tap Next at the bottom of the app.

  7. Re-enter your PIN and tap Next to confirm your decision.

After creating a PIN on Signal, the app sends you reminders from time to time to help you remember and memorize the code. If you want to use a new PIN, you can change it from your Account Settings whenever you want as long as the device you’re using is active.

When you enable the Registration Lock feature on your Account Settings tab, the app will require you to enter your PIN when you want to register to Signal with your phone number again. If you forgot your PIN, you might not be able to access your account for a week or until the lock expires.

Please note that the Registration Lock feature expires after seven days. However, the counter resets whenever you connect to your account.

To wrap it all up

Now that you know how to add a PIN to Signal, you can recover your profile and some of your other data when you switch devices. Always remember that you also need to enable the Registration Lock feature to do so.

Like we mentioned earlier, the Registration Lock expires after seven days of inactivity. So if you ever forgot your PIN when switching devices, you’ll need to wait until it expires before you can register with your phone number again.
