Before, it is not possible to change your phone number in Signal. You’ll need to delete your account, reinstall the app, register your new phone number, and add all your previous contacts again.

Thankfully, in the app’s recent update, they included a way to change your number without creating a new account. As such, you can keep your conversations and contacts while using your new number.

How to change your Signal phone number

If you have a new phone number, you can link it to your Signal account to replace your old one. In this way, there’s no need to keep your old number to access your account.

As long as you have access to your old phone number and you can still receive Signal messages with it, you can change the number linked to your account any time you want. Follow our quick tutorial below, and we’ll show you how.

1. Launch the Signal on your device and tap your profile icon on the top of the chats list.
   
   
2. Head to your Account settings.
   
   
3. Under the Account section, select the “Change phone number” option, and tap Continue.
   
   
4. Enter your old and new phone number on the empty fields and select Continue at the bottom of the screen.
   
   
5. Verify your number and tap the “Change number” button at the bottom of your screen.
6. Enter the code you received on your new phone number to confirm your decision.

Please note that you can only change your phone number on Signal when you can receive messages with your old number. Also, changing your number won’t work if you lost your phone or don’t have access to your old device.

If you don’t have access to your old device or phone number, you’ll need to delete your current account and create a new one. When you do, you’ll need to add your Signal contacts and inform them that you have a new number.

After changing your number, Signal notifies your contacts about your decision through the chat. They’ll see an alert that you changed your number.
