How To Change A Channel’s Name On Slack

Do you want to reuse one of your inactive channels for a new purpose? Or do you want to make sure that the members know what to expect on a channel at first glance? In any case, we’re here to help you. Follow our quick guide below, and we’ll teach you how to rename your channels on Slack.

Tutorial

In Slack, workspace members use channels to message and share files with other users. You can create separate channels for discussing different parts of your project or business.

As time pass by, there might be times when you no longer need the channel on your workspace. Although you have the option to delete inactive channels, you can also rename them for a different purpose instead.

With that in mind, here’s our guide on how to change the name of your workspace on Slack.

How to rename a channel on your Slack workspace

If you want to use one of your channels for a different purpose, you can rename it to let the other workspace members know. As such, there’s no need to delete unused channels and create new ones after doing so.

You can rename your workspace channels whether you’re using Slack on your phone or desktop. Check our step-by-step tutorials below, and we’ll teach you how to do it on both devices.

On your computer:

  1. Open the Slack desktop app or visit their web browser client and sign in to your account.
  2. Head to the channel that you want to rename.
  3. Click the channel’s name at the top of the conversation header to open its details.

  4. Head to the Settings tab and click the Channel name section.

  5. Update the name of the channel and click Save Changes to confirm your decision.

That’s how you change a channel’s name on the Slack desktop and web app. You can rename a channel whenever you want if you have permission to do so.

Workspace owners and admins that joined a channel can update its name whenever they want. As for regular members, they can only do so on the ones they created.

On your phone:

  1. Open Slack on your device and sign in to your workspace.
  2. Head to the channel that you want to rename.
  3. Tap the information icon on the top right of the conversation header to open the channel details.

  4. Tap the “EDIT” option below the Topic section.

  5. Update the name of the channel and tap Save on the top right to apply the changes.

Please note that you can only use names in lowercase without any spaces or periods. To rename archived channels, you need to unarchive them first.

After renaming the channel, Slack posts a message automatically on the conversation to notify all the members about your decision.

Give a new purpose to your inactive channels on Slack

Now that you know how to rename a channel on Slack, there’s no need to delete inactive channels and create new ones to replace them. Instead, you can opt to rename the channel for a different purpose.

For admins and owners on an Enterprise Grid or Business+ plan, you can use the channel management tools to rename your channels. However, please note that the Primary Owner can restrict your permission to do so.
