How To Build A Silo In Stardew Valley

Looking for a way to efficiently store your Hay in Stardew Valley? In this guide, we’ll show you how you can build a Silo in Stardew Valley.

Raising farm animals is an integral part of the Stardew Valley experience. Of course if you started keeping farm animals, you would need to feed them everyday so that they’ll yield products that you can use for cooking or selling. All animals feed on Hay so most of the time, you’ll find yourself keeping or carrying a lot of it. A good way to store your Hay or animal feed is through the Silo.

The Silo is a farm building that can be purchased from Robin at the Carpenter’s Shop. It’s only purpose is to store Hay and each silo can store 240 pieces of it. On the surface, it’s easy to overlook the importance of a silo but this is actually one of the most essential farm buildings you need to have. We would recommend that you get one as soon as you can, way before you even build a Coop or a Barn. There’s also a 50% chance you’ll get Hay whenever you cut grass using your Scythe, but this only takes effect if you already own a silo on your farm.

The best thing about having a silo is that it will make your life so much easier when it comes to feeding your animals. Silos are directly connected to the Hay Hoppers you’ll find inside Coops and Barns giving you easy access to all the Hay you’ve stored up when feeding your respective animals.

How do you get a Silo?

The silo is probably the best choice for your first farm building. It can be easily made using only a few resources that are pretty easy to obtain early on. To build a silo, you’ll need the following:

  • 100 Stone
  • 10 Clay
  • 5 Copper Bar

You can get stones by breaking rocks with your pickaxe, while you can get clay whenever you use your hoe to till land in artifact spots. Copper Bars come from Copper Ores which you can get by smashing copper nodes in the mines using your pickaxe. Once you’ve gathered 5 Copper Ores, place them in a furnace along with 1 Coal and you’ll get 1 Copper Bar.

As soon as you’ve collected the required resources, you can just head to the Carpenter’s Shop during their operating hours, 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM. Speak with Robin and she’ll build it for you at the cost of 100g plus the required materials. It takes 2 days to complete and will occupy a 3×3 space on your farm.

Useful Tips

  1. Cutting Wheat will also have a 40% chance to yield some Hay.
  2. You can check out how much Hay you have through the Farm Computer.
  3. Instead of buying multiple silos, hay can be stored in a chest (when received as a gift in the mail from Marnie or withdrawn from the Hay Hopper before a Coop or Barn is fully upgraded). Hay can be moved from the chest to the Silo when necessary.
