How To Block Artists On Spotify

Did you accidentally listen to an artist you don’t like on Spotify? Do you want to remove their songs from your Weekly playlists or mute them on the app entirely? Either way, we’re here to help you. In our guide below, we’ll show you how to block artists on Spotify.

Tutorial

One of the best features in Spotify is the Discovery Weekly list. In this playlist, the app recommends music from artists that you might like based on your recent listening preferences and other artists you love on Spotify.

Although this feature is a great way to discover new music, it isn’t perfect. Since the app doesn’t know the artists you don’t like on the app, they might recommend all kinds of songs, including ones you don’t like, on Discovery Weekly and other playlists.

Thankfully, Spotify allows you to mute artists on their mobile app. Once you do so, the app won’t play or recommend songs from the artist.

With that in mind, here’s our quick guide on how to block artists on Spotify.

How to mute artists on Spotify

Once you mute an artist on Spotify, the music they released won’t show up on recommendations from the app, including your Daily Mixes and Discovery Weekly. However, this doesn’t include songs from other artists that they might be on.

To prevent Spotify from playing songs from an artist, you need to mute them on the mobile app. The desktop app only allows you to mute certain content from your Weekly playlist. Nevertheless, we’ll teach you how to do both methods.

On your phone:
  1. Open the Spotify mobile app and sign in to your account using your email or username.
  2. Head to the Search tab and select the search bar.

  3. Type the artist that you want to block and select the right one from the search results.

  4. Tap the three horizontal dots on the artist’s page to access more options.

  5. Once the options appear on your screen, tap “Don’t play this.”

After muting an artist, Spotify won’t recommend their music to your Weekly and Daily playlists. If you decide to change your mind, all you have to do is access the artist options and allow their music to play again.

On your computer:

As we mentioned before, the desktop app only allows you to mute songs and artists on your Weekly playlist. Although doing this won’t block everything from the artist, Spotify will unlikely recommend the song when it creates a new Weekly playlist in the future.

  1. Launch the Spotify desktop app and sign in to your account.
  2. Scroll down on the home page and open your Discovery Weekly playlist.

  3. Hover on one of the songs or artists you want to block and click the Remove icon.

  4. Choose whether to mute the song or its artist.

You can repeat these steps to block multiple artists and filter your Discovery Weekly playlist on the Spotify desktop app. Muted songs won’t be available on the current playlist, and the app won’t recommend these types of music in future playlists.

You can find all muted songs on the Discover Weekly playlist by browsing it and checking for grayed-out content. To unmute the song, click the Remove icon and refresh the page.

To wrap things up

Now that you know how to mute or block artists and songs you don’t like on Spotify, you can go ahead and filter out songs from the app recommendations. In this way, the app won’t play or recommend this type of music in the future.

Always remember that you can only block artists from the Spotify mobile app. The desktop app only allows you to mute content from the Discovery Weekly playlist.
