How To Beat Volkner And The Sunyshore Gym In Pokémon Brilliant Diamond/Shining Pearl

You’re thiiis close to challenging the Pokémon League and make your claim as the rightful champion of the Sinnoh region. However, one more gym stands in your way. Here’s everything you need to know about Sunyshore City’s Shining Shocking Star, Volkner.

Sunyshore Gym

Sunyshore City is known as a port town in the Sinnoh region and is famous for being the gateway to the Pokémon League. The town is surrounded by lakes and mountains making space around it a bit scarce. To make up for this, they had some roads and bridges built as solar panels to help power the city. Because of the city’s identity as, presumably, a beacon of clean renewable energy, the town’s gym specializes in Electric Pokémon.

Once you enter the gym, you’ll notice that it buys into the theme of being an industrial power zone. There are giant gears all around the gym with a pathway placed above it. On this pathway, you can step on a switch that’ll rotate the gears so that it will connect to the next area of the gym. You must solve the puzzles in order to reach Volkner and go deeper into the gym.

There are a total of 8 trainers in this gym and most of them carry Electric type Pokémon.

School Kid Tiera

  • Pachirisu Lv.44

Guitarist Jerry

  • Luxio Lv. 44

School Kid Forrest

  • Mr. Mime Lv. 44

Poke Kid Meghan

  • Pikachu Lv. 41
  • Pikachu Lv. 41
  • Pikachu Lv. 41
  • Pikachu Lv. 41

Guitarist Lonnie

  • Raichu Lv. 44

Ace Trainer Destiny

  • Kadabra Lv. 44
  • Raichu Lv. 44

Guitarist Preston

  • Luxio Lv. 42
  • Bibarel Lv. 42

Ace Trainer Zachery

  • Steelix Lv. 44
  • Medicham Lv. 44

Electric type Pokémon are very strong when it comes to type resistances as its only weakness are Ground type moves. So, it would be best if you carried a Pokémon that is a Ground type since Ground type Pokémon are immune to all Electric type moves. However, a Pokémon simply knowing a Ground type move would suffice. Geodude is a great Pokémon that you can encounter early on. It’s a Rock/Ground type so it would do well in this gym.

Once you’ve defeated all the trainers, you can now finally face Volkner, the final Gym Leader before the Pokémon League. He is portrayed as someone seriously strong who is bored of the competition he is facing. It’s up to you to beat him and reignite his passion for battling. Make sure you have some Ground type Pokémon or Ground type moves with you to help you beat Volkner. Here are the Pokémon at his disposal.

  • Raichu Lv. 46
  • Ambipom Lv. 47
  • Octillery Lv. 47
  • Luxray Lv. 49

At first glance, you’ll notice that Octillery is an outlier being a Water type. So you’ll want to watch out for that if you plan on exclusively using Ground type Pokémon to face Volkner. His Raichu also comes equipped with the Water type move Surf, so be careful when facing it. Overall, stick to using Ground type moves and you’ll have an easy time at this gym. Earthquake is a very powerful move that you can come across before reaching this stage in the game. The best part is all three Sinnoh starters can learn this move which could go a long way in beating this gym. Infernape doesn’t exactly have a type advantage but since it has a very high Speed stat, it’s almost guaranteed that it will always go first in this matchup. Torterra is excellent here being a Grass/Ground type which makes it immune to most of Volkner’s Electric type moves. Empoleon will have a hard time here, being a Water type but since it can learn Earthquake, it isn’t as difficult as it sounds despite the type disadvantage.

Beacon Badge

As soon as you beat Volkner, you’ll receive the Beacon Badge. Thanks to this badge, you have proven your worth as a trainer and now, all Pokémon you receive in trades will obey you without question. You’ll also be able to use the Hidden Move Waterfall outside of battle to help you scale certain waterfalls. As an additional reward, Volkner will also give you a TM for the Electric type move Charge Beam

Now that you have all eight Gym Badges, you are now eligible to challenge the Pokémon League!
