Rathian

There are many famous monsters in Monster Hunter’s storied franchise. From elder dragons like Fatalis or Valstrax to difficult boss fights like Diablos or Chameleos. While they are all pretty iconic in their own right, none are as iconic as the original wyvern duo, Rathian and Rathalos. For the most part, these winged wyverns were the mascots of the franchise. Rathian is the female counterpart and is revered as a queen among its kind. It’s been the focus of many quests in the games and you can’t really consider yourself a true hunter unless you’ve hunted a Rathian. Despite only being listed under the 4 star village quests, it is still one of the more difficult monsters you’ll face. It can breathe fire and can poison you if it hits you with its tail.

So how exactly do you beat this monster? Let’s take a look at its weaknesses.

Weaknesses

Each of the weapon damage types work pretty much the same against Rathian. So, the key here is knowing where to hit. If you look at the Rathian’s Physiology, you’ll notice that the most effective spot to damage it is at its Head. It’s Neck, Wing, Leg, and Tail are also pretty good spots to focus on. It’s tail can also be severed if you’re using a cutting weapon or dealing cutting damage. The most effective element against it is Dragon followed by Thunder, then Water and Ice. At this point in the game, you should have some pretty solid choices in terms of weapons that can deal good elemental damage.

As for ailments, Thunderblight is the most effective ailment you can inflict on Rathian. Poison and Blast are pretty much useless against it. Weapons that can inflict these ailments can help you beat this monster rather quickly.

Best Weapons to Use

As we’ve mentioned before, most weapons can do a decent amount of damage against Rathian. Ultimately, it all boils down to preference. If you’re unsure, just go with the neutral weapon that has the highest amount of raw damage in your inventory. Our personal choice would be to go with any blunt weapon like the Hammer or the Hunting Horn. Blunt weapons deal the most amount of damage to Rathian when you strike it at its head. Doing this can also stun them temporarily, leaving them vulnerable to a vicious combo. Hammers are more mobile but Hunting Horns can give you a lot of buffs so, keep this in mind when deciding what weapon to use.

Useful Tips

  1. Rathian will spend a lot of it’s time airborn so it can be difficult for melee weapon users to hit it. However, Monster Hunter Rise offers the most maneuverability out of all the Monster Hunter games. Use the wirebugs to your advantage to set yourself up for an airborne attack whenever the Rathian tries to fly.
  2. Rathian will inflict Poison at you when you are hit by the spikes on its tail. It’s best to carry a few Antidotes with you to prevent your health from whittling down when poisoned.
  3. One of Rathian’s moves is spitting out fireballs directly in your direction. Try to dodge these efficiently as getting hit with one can chunk out a huge portion of your health and can even set you on fire. Don’t worry, you can just stop, drop, and do a few dodge rolls to douse the flames.
