Elite Four Lucian

Lucian is the strongest member of the Sinnoh League’s Elite Four. As such, his Pokémon come prepared and are ready to kick your butt. His team is excellently constructed and can actually be used competitively. Also, unlike the other members of the Elite Four, Lucian stays true to his area of expertise and makes sure that all of his Pokémon are actually Psychic types. To beat Lucian, you have to understand what makes his team work and why it is effective. Let’s take a closer look at his team.

Mr. Mime Lv. 59

Type: Psychic/Fairy

Ability: Filter

Item: Light Clay

Moves:

  • Light Screen
  • Reflect
  • Psychic
  • Dazzling Gleam

First up on Lucian’s team is the Barrier Pokémon, Mr. Mime. This Pokémon already has very high Special Defense and it can even get higher thanks to Light Screen. Mr. Mime is very efficient as a Special Wall and can even deal decent damage thanks to its very high Special Attack. The best way to beat Mr. Mime is to use a Pokémon that has moves it is weak to. Since it is a Psychic/Fairy type, it is weak to Poison, Ghost, and Steel type moves. A Pokémon like Gengar would work well in this matchup being a Poison/Ghost type.

Girafarig Lv. 59

Type: Normal/Psychic

Ability: Sap Sipper

Item: Mental Herb

Moves:

  • Light Screen
  • Psychic
  • Thunderbolt
  • Trick Room

Next up is Girafarig. This Pokémon can and will set up Trick Room which is a move that makes slower Pokémon attack first every turn. This can work heavily in Lucian’s favor since most of his team is very slow. Apart from that, Girafarig won’t be able to do much. Gengar would still work pretty well here and pretty much any Pokémon that has a Dark type move.

Medicham Lv. 60

Type: Fighting/Psychic

Ability: Pure Power

Item: Muscle Band

Moves:

  • Zen Headbutt
  • High Jump Kick
  • Thunder Punch
  • Ice Punch

This is when things start getting a little difficult. Lucian’s Medicham is an absolute powerhouse on his team. It’s an all out physical attacker that will challenge your Pokémon’s durability. It gets two bonuses to its Attack stat thanks to its ability, Pure Power, and its held item, Muscle Band. It is weak against Flying, Ghost, and Fairy types so your best bet to knock out Medicham is to use Pokémon from these types. Like we’ve mentioned before, having a strong Ghost type like Gengar can go a long way in beating Lucian.

Alakazam Lv. 60

Type: Psychic

Ability: Magic Guard

Item: Life Orb

Moves:

  • Nasty Plot
  • Psychic
  • Future Sight
  • Shock Wave

Alakazam is the best Psychic type in Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl. So, it’s only fitting that the Elite Four’s Psychic expert has this Pokémon on his team. It has a very high Special Attack so it can definitely deal a ton of damage if left unchecked. Since it is a pure Psychic type, it is weak to Bug, Ghost, and Dark type moves. Get a Pokémon with moves of these types with very high Speed and you can easily knock Alakazam out.

Bronzong Lv. 63

Type: Steel/Psychic

Ability: Levitate

Item: Sitrus Berry

Moves:

  • Gyro Ball
  • Earthquake
  • Payback
  • Trick Room

Lucian’s final trick up his sleeve is Bronzong. Since it is part Steel type, you may be quick to pull out a Fire type against it to gain a type advantage. While, in theory, this could easily work; it would only be effective if your Pokémon has priority or has high Speed. Otherwise, Bronzong can eliminate your Fire type Pokémon with its coverage move, Earthquake. This Pokémon also has Trick Room so it’s almost guaranteed to always attack first. Bronzong is weak against Fire, Ghost, and Dark type moves.

What Pokémon should I use?

If you haven’t noticed, we mentioned that Gengar is actually the best Pokémon to use against Lucian type wise. It’s a Poison/Ghost type and has a lot of powerful moves that can be super effective against Lucian’s team. If you don’t have Gengar on your team or would prefer a different Pokémon, you can go for Dark types or Pokémon that have Dark type moves. A solid choice would be Gyarados and Garchomp. These two Pokémon can learn the move Crunch which can be very effective against Lucian. They’re both durable and have great Attack stats making it easy for them to overpower their opponents regardless of type.
