How To Beat Crasher Wake And The Pastoria Gym In Pokémon Brilliant Diamond/Shining Pearl

Are you ready to face one of the strongest Water type specialists you’ll ever see in any Pokémon game? Crasher Wake will go at you with everything he’s got and you have to prove that you can beat him. Here’s everything you need to know about the Torrential Masked Master.

Pastoria Gym

Pastoria City is a city in the Sinnoh region that is found on the edge of the Great Marsh. The Great Marsh is a vast marshland that was once connected to the sea and is home to many rare and powerful Pokémon. The marshland keeps the weather cool during the warmer climates making it the ideal spot to raise and train Water type Pokémon which is exactly what the Pastoria Gym took advantage of.

Once you enter the gym, you’ll notice that it has a pool-like vibe to its design. You’ll also notice that there are a series of buttons that you can press that will either raise or reduce the water level, allowing you to cross to certain areas. Most of the trainers here will obviously have Water type Pokémon but some of them have sub types that make them immune to certain weaknesses. Let’s see what each trainer has on their arsenal.

Tuber Jacky

  • Buizel Lv. 26

Fisher Walter

  • Barboach Lv. 26

Sailor Damian

  • Wingull Lv. 24
  • Wingull Lv. 24

Tuber Caitlyn

  • Azurill Lv. 24
  • Marill Lv. 24

Fisher Erick

  • Goldeen Lv. 22
  • Barboach Lv. 23
  • Gyarados Lv. 24

Sailor Samson

  • Shellos Lv. 24
  • Wingull Lv. 24
  • Shellos Lv. 24

While most of these trainers carry pure Water type Pokémon, some of them carry Pokémon with a dual type. Wingull, Gyarados, and Barboach in particular are dual type’s making them immune to some of the weaknesses Water types usually have. So for this gym, we’d recommend carrying a strong mixture of Electric and Grass type Pokémon. Budew and Cherubi are some good Grass types that you’ll encounter fairly early on in the game while Shinx and Pachirisu are strong Electric types that can take out some of the other Pokémon in this gym.

Crasher Wake

Crasher Wake is Pastoria’s Gym Leader. He has the appearance akin to that of a wrestler and actually looks like he specializes in Fighting type Pokémon as opposed to what he’s really all about which are Water type Pokémon. Just like the rest of the Gym, Crasher Wake’s Pokémon aren’t just pure Water types. Here are the Pokémon on his team:

  • Gyarados Lv. 27
  • Quagsire Lv. 27
  • Floatzel Lv. 30

Crasher Wake’s Pokémon are very strong so you have to be careful with what you use against them. Gyarados comes up first and it is a Water/Flying type making it 4x weak to Electric type moves. Quagsire, on the other hand, is a Water/Ground type making it immune to Electric type moves but 4x weak against Grass type moves. Lastly, we have Floatzel who is a pure Water type that is weak and susceptible to both Grass and Electric type moves. If you started with Turtwig, then you’ll have a breeze with this gym. Apart from the Water/Flying Pokémon, Turtwig can easily handle this gym without breaking a sweat. If you started with Chimchar then you’ll probably have a hard time at this gym. It’s best if you let your fire starter sit out for most of this gym and rely more on your other Pokémon. If you started with Piplup you won’t really have an advantage or disadvantage at this gym considering it is also a Water type Pokémon. Like with Chimchar, it’s best to have Piplup sit out most of the battles and make the most out of the other Pokémon you have that has a type advantage against this gym.

Fen Badge

After beating Crasher Wake, you’ll be awarded the Fen Badge. This increases the level of the Pokémon that will obey you without question that you get from trades. It will also allow you to use the Hidden Move Defog outside of battle. It’s a pretty handy move that can clear out foggy areas. He’ll also give you TM55 which contains the move Brine. This is a damaging water type move that deals more damage if your target’s health is halved.
