Social Media
If you’re using Facebook regularly, there’s a high chance that you’re using Messenger to message or communicate with your friends. As such, you might find yourself chatting with multiple people on the app, leaving your chat list messy.
Although you can delete conversations that you no longer use on Messenger, the message history might come in handy in the future. Thankfully you have the option to archive your conversations on the app, hiding them from your chats list until you receive a new message.
With the help of the archiving feature on Messenger, you can clean up and organize your chats list without deleting any of them. In this way, you can still come back for those archived conversations if you ever need to.
Here’s our quick guide on how to archive in your Facebook Messenger app.
How to archive a chat in Facebook Messenger
If you want to hide inactive conversations from appearing on your chats list on Messenger, you can opt to archive them. By doing so, these chats won’t distract you from other active conversations and will only appear on your chats list once you receive a new message.
You can archive chats on Messenger, whether you’re on your phone or computer. With that in mind, here are our step-by-step tutorials to teach you how to hide conversations on both devices.
On your computer:
- Using your preferred web browser, visit the Messenger web client and sign in to your account.
- Hover on the chat you want to archive and click More options (three dots icon).
- On the menu that appears, click Archive chat.
That’s how you archive a chat on the Messenger web app. Until you receive a new message from the individual or group, the conversation won’t appear back on your chats list.
You can find all your archived conversations by clicking the three dots above the search bar on your chats list and selecting “Archived Chats” on the menu. On there, you can choose to unarchive chats or delete them directly.
On your Android device:
- Open the Messenger app on your phone and sign in to your account.
- On the chats list, tap and hold on to one of the conversations you want to archive to view more options.
- Once the menu appears on your screen, select Archive.
You can find all your archived conversations on the Messenger mobile app by clicking on your profile icon and selecting “Archived Chats” on the menu. From that section, you can opt to unarchive chats or delete them entirely from your messages.
Like on the Messenger web and desktop app, the archived conversations won’t appear on your chat list unless you receive or send a new message on the mobile app.
Hide your inactive chats on Messenger
Now that you know how to archive chats on Messenger, you can hide some of the conversations you no longer use. In this way, you can organize your chats list to keep only the ones that you’re actively using.
Always remember that the chat participants won’t know that you archived the conversation on your end. As such, there’s no need to worry about judgment from other people.
